Charleston – The Bridgeport Indians capped an undefeated season with a 49-7 rout of Herbert Hoover.
The Indians came into Saturday afternoon looking for their 11th state title and first of the decade. They had made their first appearance in the state final since 2019, and Bridgeport dominated from start to finish.
Like they had done all season, Bridgeport had won all their prior 13 games by at least 28 points. Perhaps the Indians saved their best performance for the state championship.
Their vaunted rushing attack set a state AAA record for the season. Saturday afternoon, they rushed 431 yards. A trio of players, Alex Moses, Josh Love, and Timothy Jeffress, went over the century mark on the ground.
“I’m super happy for the kids,” said Bridgeport head coach Tyler Phares. “They deserve it because they put in a ton of time and effort. I couldn’t be happier for our assistant coaches and their work. I glad for the community that we could come down here and put up our best performance of the season.”
The Huskies took the football and drove into enemy territory before being forced to punt. On their third snap of the football game, Josh Love raced 60 for a touchdown, setting the stage for more to come.

Love rushed for 128 yards on 12 carries.
Alex Moses, who rushed for a game-high 141 yards on seven carries, scored on a 76-yard run on their succeeding drive’s opening snap. Moses won MVP honors for Bridgeport.
The game mirrored Friday night’s AA final when Frankfort scored two touchdowns on their first two offensive plays.
Leading 14-0 after 12 minutes, Bridgeport put the game away in the second stanza, outscoring the Huskies 28-7 to open up a 42-7 lead at intermission.
Timothy Jeffress added a pair of touchdowns, scoring on runs of 8 and 26 yards on drives that capped 61 and 44 yards. Jeffress rushed for 115 yards on nine attempts.
“It feels good because, as seniors, we’ve been working for this since we were freshmen,” Jeffress said. “Our prior opponents and coaches made us into state champions. Grinding, lifting, it all came true from there. I don’t have any words for it right now. That’s how crazy it is. We wouldn’t be able to do any of this without our coaches. We need great blockers like Wes Brown and Noah West to have the record that we do. When you got the backs like me, Moses, and Josh Love. We’ll do it for you.”
Also scoring his second touchdown of the night, Moses raced 46 yards for a touchdown for his second long score of the afternoon.
Herbert Hoover did get on the scoreboard in the second quarter when Talon Harrison caught a 46-yard touchdown pass from Dane Hatfield.
The Huskies’ outstanding senior signal-caller led the team, completing 11 of 21 passes for 159 yards and the touchdown and rushing for a team-high 30 yards on 19 carries.
Before the half, Bridgeport drove 49 yards in eight plays, capped by Jack Spatafore’s 1-yard run with 22 seconds remaining.
In the third quarter, Donovan Williams’ 9-yard run put the mercy clock into effect at 10:39.

Defensively, they limited the Huskies to 33 yards rushing and 192 offensive yards.
“We believe in all three phases of the game,” Phares said. “Our defense has been fantastic. Coming into it, we knew that our run defense would be good, but our pass defense has really come around. I was glad to see our kids come here and play with their ears pinned back.”
The Indians now celebrate their 11th state title having won in ’55, ’72, ’79, ’86, ’88, ’00, ’13, ’14, ’15, ’19, ’24.
