The Jim Thorpe Olympians defensive line was fairly strong in defending the run. Central Catholic rushed for virtually nothing on the night. So they went to the air. And to say they had success in the passing game is quite the understatement. Patrick Cahill and his corps of wide receivers were on point, connecting on five touchdown passes. Four of those went at least 69 yards in a 52-21 victory for the home team at J Birney Crum Stadium Thursday night.

Jim Thorpe returned the game’s opening kickoff into Vikings territory and a personal foul quickly put the ball on the 30. On the second play, Cole Lazorick’s pass was batted up in the air and intercepted by Dion Johnson to thwart the early threat.

Harry Restino hauled in a 32-yard catch on Cahill’s first pass of the game, but ACC came up short on 4th & 3, turning the ball over on downs. Jim Thorpe then moved steadily down the field over the next ten plays, eventually getting as far as the ACC 32. But once again, Lazorick was picked off. Treyvaugn Torres-Johnson jumped in front of the intended receiver along the sideline.

Two plays later, Cahill threw a short pass out to his right, finding Luis Martinez. Martinez toed the sideline, dodging a few tacklers, going 79 yards for the first score of the game. With 4:01 to go in the first quarter, the Vikings took a 7-0 lead.

The Olympians again drove near the red zone, but came up short on a 4th & 3 call that gained nothing. Cahill stepped up in the pocket on the next play and fired long to Greg Tillman for a 77-yard touchdown.

Trailing 15-0 early in the second quarter, Jim Thorpe needed another positive play. Unfortunately, they were backed up five yards on a penalty and went three-and-out. Once again, Central Catholic made quick work of the ensuing possession. It took just two plays, as Cahill hit Tahir Edmondson on a little screen pass. Edmondson ripped through the middle of the field, shaking a tackler and going 78 yards to pay dirt. That gave the Vikings a 21-0 lead with 8:11 to play in the first half.

Jim Thorpe finally broke through on their next drive, as yet another solid kick return set them up at the Vikings 33. Six plays later, Lazorick was into the end zone from three yards out to cut the deficit to 21-7.

The Olympians enjoyed short-lived momentum. Gavin Baker caught Cahill in the backfield for a loss. But the Vikings offense fought back. Cahill, on the run, hit Luis Martinez in traffic for a 20 yard pickup. On the next play, he found a wide open Restino streaking down the far sideline for the 40-yard score and 28-6 lead. Central tacked on a 30-yard field goal and led 31-7 at the break.

Luis Martinez started off the third quarter with a bang. On a short pass, he somehow spun and broke free from five defenders, navigating the middle of the field and accelerating to the end zone for a 69-yard score.

With no yards gained on their opening possession of the second half, Jim Thorpe was forced to punt, trailing 38-7. Di’Quiawn Leak broke through the line and blocked the punt. The ball sailed into the air and landed in his hands. Leak took the ball to the end zone for the score that invoked the mercy rule with 10:38 to play in the third quarter. The Vikings were well on their way, leading 45-7.

Jim Thorpe gained seven yards on their next possession and Lazorick’s fourth down pass was incomplete for another turnover on downs. Torres-Johnson scored late in the third quarter, giving ACC its longest run on the night with a 15-yard touchdown.

Jim Thorpe tacked on two late touchdowns to make the final score a little better. Bobby Levins ripped off a 56-yard gain that setup Lazorick to go in from a yard out. Connor Zurawa made a diving 16-yard touchdown catch with 3:31 to play, as well.

On the night, Patrick Cahill was 13/17 for 480 yards and five touchdowns. Cole Lazorick was held to 8/25 for 118 yards, with a touchdown and two picks. The Vikings only ran 34 offensive plays on the night, with their longest drive going seven plays.

The Vikings will now meet Bethlehem Catholic in a Holy War redux next Thursday night at BASD Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 6:30

Jim Thorpe says goodbye to Josh Louk, Cole Lazorick, Connor Zurawa and Gavin Strohl, who will all be graduating.
