The first play of the game for the Green Knights was a simple 2-yard carry up the middle, but the significance was much greater. On the short run, Caiden Faust surpassed the 2,000-yard rushing mark for his career as a Green Knight and spurred on quite the day for the Pen Argyl offense on their way to a 37-20 victory.
Faust made his mark on the defense early, too. On the first play from scrimmage for Catasauqua, he stripped Cadeo Estronza and the Knights took over. With 5:20 left in the opening quarter, Faust capped a seven play drive with his 5-yard scamper into the end zone.
Catasauqua had a hard-nosed follow-up drive. The Rough Riders converted a 4th & 2 and benefited from a personal foul that moved the ball into Argyl territory. Estronza would not be stopped this time, taking it in from nine yards out off the right side. The Roughies were back within 8-6 as the first quarter wound down.
The Rough Riders flexed their defensive muscle when Omar Pacheco picked off a Soos pass over the middle; Pen Argyl had been backed up to their own 1 following a block in the back penalty and fumble. Catty took over on the Knight 35, poised to take an early second quarter lead. But it didn’t happen. After six plays, they had lost four yards and had to punt.
Soos hit Zach Metzgar on the left side and Metzgar took the ball the last 20 yards to the house, completing the 47-yard touchdown play. Midway through the second quarter, the Green Knights led 16-6.
The defense forced two more punts and overcame a Terrell Estes fumble. With ten seconds until the intermission, Soos ran into the end zone from five yards out. At the half, Pen Argyl led 23-6 and was well on their way to victory.
Early in the third, Rocco DeCesare returned a Catty fumble into the red zone, but Pen Argyl ended up turning the ball over on downs. Later in the quarter, Soos ran tough, breaking away from multiple tackles and bouncing off a defender on his way to an 11-yard touchdown run. That increased the lead to 30-6.
Soos added to his eventual 247 passing yards in the fourth quarter when he found Anthony Beltran for a 33-yard pickup. They completed the drive on a 7-yard touchdown connection.
While Catasauqua added two scores late, it would not be enough. Tray Dunn had been held in check in the first half, finally breaking through for touchdown runs of 47 and 10 in the fourth quarter to finish with a 152 yard day.
For the Green Knights, Faust finished with a 95 yard effort on the ground and two catches for 21 yards.
Pen Argyl will finish out their regular season at Bangor next Friday night before entering the District XI 2A playoffs. Catasauqua plays host to Palmerton next week before entering the playoff field. They will play at Schuylkill Haven in two weeks.
