Non-PIAA Game

Calvert Hall(Towson, MD) Cardinals at Kiski School (Saltsburg) Cougars

The Kiski school opened it’s season with a giant challenge. The visiting Cardinals are loaded with at least four Division I  recruits, a 58 man roster, two scrimmages and one game already played.

The Cougars have been practicing for only two weeks and there school isn’t even open yet. They have only 26 players on their roster. They do have 12 seniors but many have never played together including Junior Levi Porter who transferred from Indiana Area High School. In fact 15 of their players aren’t from America. The roster includes 5 Germans, 2 Chinese, 2 Canadians, 2 Mexicans, 3 French and one player from Belgium. That makes it a little hard to develop any kind of team chemistry.

Levi Porter was Indiana’s offense last year playing RB/WR. At times he seemed to be getting the ball on every play. He’s a super athlete, who excels at Basketball & Track also. I was at Indiana for Senior night last year and he had a great game. So I made the trip south to see how things were to see he was going to adjust to his new home.

Kiski played well early as both offenses failed on their first three possessions which included five punts and a turnover on downs. Kiski started their fourth drive at the Cardinal 46. The first play of the drive was a handoff to Porter, who ran straight ahead and he was off to the races for a touchdown. The Cardinals would return the following kickoff to the Cougar 26. That is when a severe thunderstorm hit and the game was delayed for close to an hour. When they came back it was all Calvert Hall. Kiski kept it close to the fourth quarter when the Cardinals scored three touchdowns in 39 seconds, two on fumbles.

Porter played running back and linebacker. He never came off the field playing on special teams too.  He was often playing Mike linebacker and coaching from the field. It was a very impressive performance with his new team.
