The Cambria Heights Highlanders made crucial second half adjustments in comeback 34-26 victory over Conemaugh Township at Conemaugh Township Memorial Stadium.
A Heritage Conference battle came down to the wire with a back and forth effort from both squads. Conemaugh Township got off to a hot start and went into the half up a touchdown. Cambria Heights came back from the half and completely shut down their offense and rode the legs of Nolan Clawson to the victory.
“Credit to them, they came out fired up,” Cambria Heights Head Coach Jarrod Lewis stated. “They are a good football team and they are well coached. We knew it was going to be a battle and it certainly was tonight.”
Conemaugh Township started off with the ball Greyson Studer gained 34 yards on the third play, setting the Indians up in the red zone. A flag and a big negative play set up third and long, but Studer found Aidan Burnworth for a 22 yard score.
On the next drive, Cambria Heights immediately drove down the field with 34 yards coming from Clawson. The Highlanders were set up inside the ten, but the Indians ripped the ball out and Brennan Lohr jumped on it at the one yard line.
The Highlanders forced a punt following that and on the second play of the new drive, Kaiden Ivory dropped back and hit Clawson for a 49 yard touchdown to tie the game.
Conemaugh Township got the ball back and quickly moved it down the field. Studer connected with DJ Bambino for a 41 yard gain. Two first downs later, Lohr ran it in from six yards out.
The Indian defense stood strong after the score, forcing a punt. Studer quickly got Conemaugh Township rolling again with another deep ball to Bambino for a 26 yard gain. They connected in the end zone a few plays later from six yards out. Cambria Heights blocked the extra point attempt after.
With less than three minutes to go, Cambria Heights got the ball and chipped away at the deficit. Clawson got them right back into it with his second touchdown, this time from 10 yards out to make the score 20-14 entering halftime.
“In the first half, they definitely controlled the line of scrimmage,” Coach Lewis explained. I don’t think we tackled well or went to our gaps well.”
Cambria Heights got rolling in the second half once Dawson Warner took a handoff for 49 yards and a few plays later ran it in from four yards out, giving the Highlanders their first lead of the night.
Conemaugh Township bounced right back, running it down the field for six minutes. Lohr capped off the long drive with his second touchdown on the night from seven yards out. The two point attempt after was failed, giving them a five point lead.
Cambria Heights quickly got themselves in the red zone again as Ivory found Bryce Lewis for a 50 yard gain. Warner followed with a three yard touchdown to give them the lead. They also failed the two point attempt, leaving the score at 27-26.
The Highlanders forced a punt and chewed four minutes off the clock before Clawson ran it in for his third score of the night, giving Cambria Heights a 34-26 lead.
Conemaugh Township started to drive once again, but on fourth and 15, Studer hit Lohr on the screen and he ran it near the sticks, but was a yard short of the first down. Cambria Heights got the first down they needed and ran the clock out.
“I can’t ask my team for a better effort than they gave tonight,” Conemaugh Township Head Coach Brandon Studer commented. “When you play a powerhouse like Cambria Heights, you know what they are going to come and do. We challenge our guys to play to the best of their potential and I think they did that tonight.”
Cambria Heights struggled initially to stop that Indian offense who scored three first half touchdowns. After the halftime adjustments they made, Conemaugh Township managed just one score and three punts.
“Good coaches make good adjustments,” Coach Studer replied. “Coach Lewis has a top notch program and he has them rolling year in and year out. They made their adjustments, but even with those adjustments our kids battled and we never gave up.”
