Farrell – Luke Costello accounted for 198 yards of total offense and four touchdowns as Cathedral Prep flexed its muscles 44-18 over previously unbeaten Farrell.

In their final test before the postseason, the Ramblers put up 420 yards of offense, winning their fourth straight game since a disappointing 2-3 start to their season.

“Our kids played really well tonight,” said Cathedral Prep head coach Mike Krahe. “We tried to make this as close to a playoff atmosphere as possible. We wanted to put our kids in a situation where they focused on better each day, and they did a great job tonight.”

The Ramblers built a 21-0 first-half lead and never looked back – tailbacks Dajoure Hollingsworth and Suhtaun Lewis combined to rush for 203 yards and two scores.

Both backs scored on first-quarter touchdown runs as Hollingsworth opened the scoring with a 14-yard run, capping a 30-yard drive set up by Rayfes Rodgers’ interception and subsequent return.

Cathedral Prep then drove 76 yards in six plays, with Lewis breaking free for a 57-yard touchdown run.

Suhtaun Lewis rushed for a game-high 115 yards on seven carries, while Hollingsworth added 88 yards on 14 attempts.

“Offensively, it’s all about trying to figure out what the defense is going to do,” Krahe said. “We wanted to take advantage of what they were giving us. Our backs did well finding the holes and running between the tackles.”

Succeeding a fourth down stop at the Steelers’ 40-yard line, Rayfes Rodgers hauled in a 38-yard touchdown from Luke Costello, giving the Ramblers a 21-0 lead on the initial snap of the second stanza.

“They’re a well-oiled machine and a great program over there,” said Farrell head coach Anthony Pegues. “I’m proud of my guys; there was a point in the game where I thought they were going to pack it in and take the butt whooping. They didn’t. They hunkered down and fought to the end.”

Farrell got on the board on their ensuing drive when Juelz Johnson finished a 12-play 66-yard drive with a 6-yard run.

The Rambler offense continued to roll as Ethan Seifert caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Costello.

Taking over at their 5-yard line with 2:11 to play in the first half, the Steelers drove 95 yards in nine plays aided by 35 penalty yards against the Ramblers – Farrell beat the clock when Johnson caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Kabron Smith with nine seconds remaining until halftime.

“Their offense is scary. They have playmakers all over the place,” said Krahe. “Our kids did a great focusing in and doing their job. We did give up the one right before the half that I wasn’t pleased about, but we’re getting better and starting to gel as a defense.”

Juelz Johnson rushed for 86 yards on 16 carries while catching five passes for 13 yards and two total touchdowns.

Coming out of the locker room with a 28-12 lead, Cathedral Prep went on an 11-play 42-yard drive capped with Cameron Christman’s 27-yard field goal.

The Ramblers kept rolling on their next two possessions as Hollingsworth’s 40-yard gain led to Roberts ’15-yard touchdown reception from Costello to close the third quarter.

In the final frame, Costello ran keeper 25 yards for a touchdown, pushing the Ramblers’ lead to 44-12 with 8:28 to play.

Luke Costello completed 10-of-14 passes for 148 yards with three touchdowns while rushing for 50 yards on eight carries.

Farrell closed the scoring on the ensuing snap when Danny Odem caught a short pass and used some shifty moves to find the end zone on a 63-yard reception from Smith.

Kabron Smith completed 19-of-29 passes for 229 yards with a pair of touchdowns and interceptions. Danny Odem led all receivers with six catches for 100 yards and the score.

Despite the loss, Pegues was pleased with his team’s effort against the 5A powerhouse and will look forward to the 2A playoffs.

“There are no moral victories for us,” said Pegues. “This is one of the best learning experiences I can give these guys. We wanted to play this game against a bigger school. If we would have taken this week off and stayed undefeated, they wouldn’t have learned anything. I wanted to get them against a great team and program to show them that anything can happen on any night.”

Cathedral Prep will now have a bye week in the opening round of the playoffs as they await the winner of the District 6 final between Hollidaysburg and Central Mountain.

“We had a little hiccup in the middle of the season, to be honest,” Krahe concluded. “But our kids have been working hard and getting better each day. For a couple of weeks, we weren’t getting the payday we were hoping for – right now, our confidence is back, and we’re starting to play with some swagger.”
