The Philipsburg-Osceola Mounties will host the Central Scarlett Dragons on Friday night under the lights of picturesque Mountie Field. The Mounties will look to continue to build on their 2024 record of 4-6, while the Dragons are hoping to rebound after they went 5-6 last season, their worst record since 2019.
While early season football is sometimes characterized as inconsequential, this would be a big win for either team. The winner of this game would hold a crucial tiebreaker that could ultimately decide a spot in the District 6 3A playoffs.
The Mounties are returning their QB Archer Baughman, who threw for 902 yards and 7 touchdowns in his sophomore season. The Mounties are also anticipating a breakout season from Demarcus Law, a sophomore RB, who finished 6th in the Class 2A State Championships for Track in the 100m and 2nd in the 200m. Defensively, their defensive linemen, Jack Cartwright, Ryan McClure, and Connor Eichenlaub all return after getting experience in 2024.
For the visiting Dragons, they will feature a very different offensive unit from a year ago. After losing standout QB Eli Muthler, they will turn the keys to the offense over to Eli’s younger brother, Jesse Muthler. Even as a freshman, Muthler received significant playing time in last year’s playoffs, throwing for 292 yards and 2 touchdowns. Central will also feature many names in the backfield like Semaj Musei, Coltin Harbaugh, and Cole Knisely. Defensively, the Dragons will look to their DEs Bronson Myers and Carter Schenk, who played extensively in their sophomore seasons, racking up 15 TFLs and 6.5 sacks combined last year.
3 Stats to Know:
- 19.1 – Mountie’s points scored per game last year
- 9 – The number of offensive starters Central had to replace this offseason
- 26-13 – All-time series record, in favor of Central; last meeting in 2020, where Central won 40 – 14
