Central York beat Manheim Township 26-14 Friday night in the 1st round of the PIAA playoffs. Led by a dominating defense performance Central York was able to control the game from the start. Quarterback Beau Pribula led Central York with 2 rushing touchdowns and 2 passing touchdowns on the night. The Penn State commit made smart, efficient plays all for his team, but the defense stood out on the night. Central York Head Coach Gerry Yonchiuk “Our defense was lights out. Playoff games are hard to win. We played great defense tonight”.

Coming into this game Anthony Ivey of Township had 49 catches and 8 touchdowns on the year. The Penn State commit is a homerun hitter who can take it to the house anytime he touches the ball. For Central York, the plan was to contain him on the night. Yonchiuk “Yeah, we had a plan to stop Ivey. You can truly stop a great receiver, but it takes a team effort and you will take your lumps somewhere else”. Ivey had 0 catches on 2 targets all night. Trenton Dunnick starting linebacker on Ivey “He is a great receiver, 4-star kid. We needed to find a way to contain him”.

Central York got the ball first on the night when the opening kickoff hit a Township player and Central was able to recover the ball. Pribula rushed in from 2 yards out on a 4th and goal and Central took an early 6-0 lead (the extra point was blocked).  Pribula then hit Treyshawn Smith with a 16-yard touchdown pass the next drive to extend the lead to 12-0 (2 point conversion was no good). Pribula then extended the lead again with a 4 yard rush with 3:01 left in the half and Central was up 19-0.

Township responded though with a touchdown drive when Quarterback Hayden Johnson hit Landon Kennel for a long passing play and Jake Laubach rushed in from 2 yards out. The score was 19-7 at the half. Central York opened the 2nd half with a long touchdown drive and Pribula hit Smith again with a touchdown pass. Township would score one more time, but Central would not let them score again on the night for a final of 26-14.

The key to the game for Central York was defense and mistake-free football on offense.  Yonchiuk “We played mistake-free football tonight and had so many defensive moments to win the game”. Dunnick had one of the biggest plays of the night when late in the game Hayden Johnson and Township were trying to mount a drive and he intercepted Johnson. It was an impressive play because he tipped it up and intercepted it from his linebacker position. Dunnick on the play “I saw the inside slot Wide Receiver and put my hands up and knocked it up and made the play”. Yonchiuk on his star player “He keeps stepping, up. He is a tremendous football player. He stepped up when we had key injuries on this team”.

Playoff games are won by playing mistake-free football and making plays when they count. Central York did that tonight. It wasn’t flashy but it was hard-fought and they won the game. Yonchiuk also credited his defensive coordinator Mike Cesarano with a great game plan. Yonchiuk “Probably the best game I have ever seen him call and he is a great football coach”. In the end, Yonchiuk simply said “So many good moments defensively tonight for us”.
