Brody McCrerey caught a game-winning touchdown pass from quarterback Aaron Walsh as time expired to help Chartiers-Houston defeat Cornell, 27-26, also securing Chartiers a spot in the WPIAL playoffs.
McCrerey, a junior, also caught the first touchdown of the game for Chartiers-Houston, who trailed 12-0 at the time, on the first play of the second quarter.
Shortly after Chartiers made it a five point game, Cornell made it 18-7 as senior wide receiver Isaiah Dawson scored his second touchdown of the game on a pass from MJ Stuckey.
A Latae Littlejohn touchdown and a Khylil Johnson 2-point conversion extended the Cornell lead to 26-7 before halftime. Little did Cornell know it had scored its last points of the ball game.
Sophomore Dominic Andreolli capped off a convincing Chartiers-Houston drive to begin the second half, running it in from a yard out, and cutting the deficit to 12.
Late in the third, Cornell was piecing together a drive that ultimately came to an end thanks to an interception from Chartiers-Houston junior Julius Livingston.
With eight minutes left, Andreolli scored his second touchdown, making it a one possession game at 26-21.
Cornell took the clock down to under two-and-a-half minutes to go, but the possession came up empty as they turned it over on downs.
Chartiers-Houston’s first three plays went nowhere, but Walsh found McCrerey on fourth-and-10 to keep the game alive. Facing another fourth down on the next series of downs, Walsh hit his tight end Jacob Luba across the middle of the field for a 40+ yard gain, but Luba was tackled in bounds, and Chartiers-Houston had no timeouts left.
A Walsh QB draw that ran out of bounds stopped the clock with five seconds to go, ball on the Cornell 20.
On the last play of the game, Walsh rolled to his left and hit McCrerey in the back of the end zone to win the game, 27-26, improving Chartiers-Houston to 6-3, 3-2 in conference play.
Cornell falls to 5-4 and will travel to Monessen for its regular season finale.
