The Claysburg Kimmel Bulldogs exploded in the second half to defeat the Everett Warriors 41-27.
Both teams punted right out of the gate. On Everett’s second drive, the Warriors ate up six and a half minutes, running right down the field. Claysburg forced a fourth and five, but Jonathan Cooper found Tyson Grove for a 24 yard touchdown.
On the kickoff, Claysburg took a return across the 50, but Everett stripped the ball out. They picked up another two first downs and punted.
Claysburg immediately punted on a three and out, giving Everett solid field position. They were moving down the field well, picking up three first downs. After the third one, a 15 yard penalty set them back far.
On third and long, the Warriors committed an illegal motion and they thought the play was over. Paydden Knisely played it anyway and got a strip sack and fumble recovery, giving the Bulldogs the ball back.
“We always tell our kids to play through the whistle and there was not whistle,” Claysburg Head Coach Chuck Kassick explained. “I told him what a brilliant play. If that wasn’t the momentum shift, I don’t know what was.”
Claysburg finally found momentum as Mason Campagna connected with Gavin Treon on fourth down for a 21 yard gain. Then a few plays later, the duo connected in the end zone on an acrobatic catch from Treon for a four yard score, tying the game.
After the half, Claysburg immediately scored off a 43 yard bomb from Campagna to Treon.
Claysburg forced a punt and drove right down the field again. Campagna found Tyler Mowry for a big 23 yard gain, setting them up at the one yard line for Mowry to take the jet handoff for the score.
Then on the following kickoff, Gavin Goodrich caught it and took it back for a 68 yard return, getting Everett right back into it.
The Bulldogs responded with a long drive, capped off by a 13 yard rushing touchdown from Campagna.
Claysburg went into the kickoff trying to prevent a big return and decided to onside kick and they got it. A play later, Cooper intercepted it, giving the ball right back to Everett.
Then Claysburg got an interception from Braydon Haney, giving them the ball right back. But then, the Bulldogs fumble it and Jakobe Harmon scoops it up and takes it back for a touchdown.
The Bulldogs responded with a strong drive, but Everett forced a fourth down. Campagna didn’t care, took the snap and ran it for a 51 yard score.
Then Claysburg onsided it again and got the ball right back. They drove right back down the field, but missed the 25 yard field goal attempt.
Everett responded by giving the ball to Harmon and he broke several tackles for a long 79 yard touchdown.
Claysburg’s offense was just too much as Campagna immediately hit Treon on the slant and he took it 56 yards for the score, wrapping up the score at 41-27.
“We did okay at times and we made a lot of mistakes,” Everett Head Coach Brian Koontz stated. “They were pretty good at taking advantage of our mistakes. We had opportunities in the first half and didn’t take advantage.”
