Clearfield drops BEA in downpour

BEA was knocked from the unbeaten ranks in a downpour last night in Wingate with a exciting 13-7 win. The Bison shut down the Eagle run game and forced BEA to try and make plays through the air in a constant downpour. “I thought it was a great football game. They (Clearfield) did a lot of good things against us defensively. We wish the rain didn’t happen. I think the rain was a factor but there’s no excuses. They played a nice football game, hats off to them. Our kids learned tonight. I told them in there that you either win or you learn. Tonight we learned,” said Bald Eagle Area coach Jesse Nagle.

But the win didn’t come easy. Clearfield scored the go ahead touchdown with just 1:09 left on the clock quarterback Will Domico found Brady Collins for the go ahead score. The kick failed leaving the score 13-7

That left the door open for the Eagles to get the win, and they nearly did. Starting at their own 23, the Eagles drove down the field with quick hitters to the sideline by Carson Nagle. Three times the Eagle qb hit Kahale Burns who made great toe tap catches at the stripe, to move BEA within striking distance. A crucial pass interference gave the Eagles to ball at the Clearfield 19 but a crushing blow to Nagle by Jonathan Rowles and Isaac Putt forced the ball loose and Clearfield recovered the loose rock securing the win.

“We’re just taking it one game at a time, we’ll evaluate this one and get ready for Richland” said Clearfield head coach Myles Caragein. “Our line did a great job. They’re buying in and they’re working hard and it’s showing.”

It took most of the first two quarters for either team to find the scoreboard. With 2:09 left in the first half, BEA got on the board with a 24 yard, 10 play drive after a bad snap on a punt gave the Eagles great field position. But they had to work hard for the score, converting on fourth down twice. Finally Cam Dubbs finished the drive with a 3 yard run around the left end to put BEA up 7-0.

The rain never stopped falling, but that didn’t stop the Bison run game led by Carter Chamberlain and Collins. I say that lightly as both backs only managed 50 yards a piece, but it was just enough to keep the Bison in the game. With just over 4 minutes left in the third quarter Domico scrambled and hit Rowles for a 20 yard gain to the 30, then several plays later Carter Freeland went in from 25 yards out. The kick tied the score at 7 with 3:39 left in the third.

“Our line struggled in the first half but they were hungry. They came out in the second half and played hard” said Domico after the game.

Clearfield (6-1) will face a strong Richland team next week while BEA will look to rebound at Johnstown in a LHAC crossover game.
