Lawrence Park – Conneaut used a strong defense and rushing attack to down homestanding Iroquois 23-13 Thursday night at John L. Post Stadium.

It wasn’t a perfect game, but it doesn’t need to be to be counted as a win. Head coach Josh Blood knows his Eagles need improvement, but he’s proud of another 2-0 start.

“That’s what we preach to the guys,” Blood said. “This isn’t one we’re going to look back on and say we played our best. Our defense bailed us out a couple of times, and we were able to win a nasty one.”

On a wet and chilly night for August up in Lawrence Park Township, things got off to an inauspicious start for the Conneaut.

On the opening series of the game, Treyvon Scott raced 67 yards down the near sideline for a touchdown, putting Iroquois in front 7-0 with just over two minutes into the contest.

The Braves were missing their starting quarterback, Cole Bennett, who was injured during the second half of last week’s loss against Cochranton. They turned to freshman Chase Cocolin.

“We knew they were battling injuries coming in,” said Blood. “But we had an awesome game plan that our defensive coordinator, Bill Stevenson, cooked up. I’m really proud of the way these kids executed.”

That would play a factor in the outcome as the Eagles limited Iroquois to only 168 yards for the game, including only a single yard of offense in the final 24 minutes.

“We run some complicated things on defense, and they hung in there, and stuck with it, Blood said. ”

Conneaut responded with a 9-play 67-yard drive capped off by Wyatt Luke’s 25-yard touchdown run. The Eagles took the lead for good late in the opening quarter when a bad punt snap resulted in a safety, putting them ahead 9-7 after a quarter.

During the middle stages of the second stanza, Alex Paskorz hauled in a 19-yard touchdown pass from Mason Stone, extending the lead 16-7.

Defensively, Johnny Sandau and Brayden Feeney came up with second-quarter interceptions to blunt any Iroquois momentum, specifically after Cocolin connected with Noah Olowinski on a 55-yard completion to the Eagles’ 20-yard line late in the first half that led to the first of two interceptions by Feeney.

A couple of mistakes by Conneaut in the second half kept the game close. The first was a mishandled punt snap by Nick Street that led to Iroquois taking over at their 2-yard line.

On 4th-and-goal from the seven, Cocolin ruled out a found Ethan Alderson in the end zone that pulled the Braves to 16-13 at the 7:52 mark of the third quarter.

Late in the third, the Eagles appeared close to putting the game on ice, as Chance Meader looked to be sailing for a 22-yard touchdown run, only to have the ball knocked out of his hands at the 1-yard line, resulting in a touchback.

“We preach perseverance to these guys all the time,” said Blood. “Chance didn’t want to let his teammates down after that. He played with incredible emotion after that. We talk about being the goldfish. These guys put those mistakes behind them tonight.”

But on this night, Conneaut’s defense would not be denied, and they shut Iroquois completely down and eventually put the game on ice when Aidan Ford ran 51 yards for a touchdown with 4:30 to play, capping a 5-play 65-yard drive.

“We had a rough week of practice,” Ford said. “That’s not quite the result we wanted, but a win is a win.

Ford’s touchdown run came on 3rd-and-10. He finished the night with 83 yards on eight carries. In contrast, Chance Meader led Conneaut with 124 yards on 25 carries.

“When you have a bad play, you have to forget about it and move on,” said Ford. “That’s our motto: forget about it and move on. I just knew in my head I had to break it. I knew I was going to step up and make a big play. On that play, it opened up down the middle, and I just ran as fast as I could.”

The Eagles improve to 2-0 on the season and will host Hickory next Friday night.

“Our entire region is full of tremendous teams,” concluded Blood. “We have to up our game quite a bit, and we’re going to address that in practice.”

Iroquois was led by Treyvonn Scott, who ran for 78 yards on ten attempts. The Braves will try to win their first game of the year when they travel to Eisenhower next Friday.
