With Noah Schultz out with an injury and the possibility of the postseason, the Crestwood defense kept Spartans star running back Isaiah Cobb in check as the Comets took the victory on their senior night 34-6.  “It’s the seniors stepping up through what could be our last week. They wanted to leave this field the right way and we had an awesome week. Our guys came to play tonight.” Comets Head Coach Ryan Arcangeli said.

After both teams failed to score on their opening drives, Crestwood took over at their own 30 yard line. On a second and 8, Jay Swank went to Evan Fey for a 13 yard gain. Chase Pugh did most of the carries and finished with a one yard touchdown run for a 7-0 Crestwood lead with 1:58 remaining in the first quarter. The Spartans took over and got into Crestwood territory as the first quarter came to an end. Valley West faced a 4th and 10 and tried a fake punt but it ended up being a six yard loss as the Comets took over at their own 45 yard line.

Crestwood proceeded to drive to the Valley West 37 yard line where they faced a third and 12 and Brendan Dennis went 34 yards to the Spartan three yard line and the drive finished with Pugh’s second score of the game from five yards out to make it 14-0 Crestwood with six minutes remaining in the second quarter. The Spartans took over and it looked like the drive ended with a punt after an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Valley West but a roughing the kicker penalty gave the Spartans another chance before halftime but were unable to capitalize as the score was 14-0 Crestwood at the half.

After a three and out on Valley West’s opening drive, it only took three plays for the Comets as Dennis went 49 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-0 with 8:23 remaining in the third quarter. After another three and out by the Spartans, the Comets split carries for Pugh and Ethan Shudak as Crestwood went on a 12 play drive as Pugh scored his third touchdown of the night from four yards out and a 28-0 lead with 38.7 seconds remaining in the third quarter. On the Spartans next drive, two plays into the fourth quarter, Ethan Shudak returned a fumble 51 yards for a score. The Comets missed the PAT to make it 34-0 with 11:06 remaining in the fourth quarter. Valley West got on the board as time expired as Daniel Stavish punched it in from one yard out to make the final score 35-6.

Both teams await their playoff fates as results of other games come in. Arcangeli on the potential of making the playoffs. “You want to have these guys for one more week. If this is the last memory we have, we’ll accept that because we put ourselves in that position. If we get one more, we’re gonna enjoy it.” At the time of writing this article, not all the playoff spots were set in stone.
