On Miltary Appreciation Night at Crestwood Stadium, the Comets made it their goal to get their first win. Crestwood donned special camo jerseys for the game tonight. “Our job tonight was to honor our veterans with a win” Crestwood Head Coach Ryan Arcangeli said. The Comets defense answered the call as they defeated Western Wayne 21-0 at home.

The Wildcats started off with the ball and looked like they were going to move the ball well with two first downs but a sack and an incompletion forced a Western Wayne punt. They attempted a fake punt but came up short and the Comets took over with good field position at the Wildcat 36 yard line. The drive resulted in no points as the field goal came up short.

Crestwood got the ball back after a diving interception by Cole Kakalecik on a second down play and took over at the Western Wayne 22. However, the Comets did not capitalize as they went four and out as we headed to the end of the first quarter with a scoreless tie.

Western Wayne was driving down the field at the end of the first but facing a fourth and 2 at the Crestwood 40 yard line and the Comet defense caused the Wildcats to lose one yard as Crestwood took over. However, the Comets turned over the ball two plays later as a pass was intercepted by Jaiden DeRosa.

The Wildcats drove down the field highlighted by a Frankie Leyshon pass to Thomas Chernasky for 26 yards on third and 9 into Comet territory. Western Wayne drove all the way to the Comet 12 yard as they faced a fourth and 3. Luke Janiszewski ended up just short of the sticks and Crestwood took over.

Just before halftime, Noah Schultz went for 57 yards on a third and 3. Chase Pugh added 17 yards on the next play as the Comets had a first and goal at the nine yard line. Two plays later, the Comets pulled a reverse and Brendan Dennis scored from five yards out as Crestwood lead 7-0 with 20.4 seconds to go before half and that’s the halftime score.

Both teams failed to score on their respective opening drives. On the Comets next drive, Pugh went for 31 on a 2nd and 3 to the Wildcat 24 yard line. Crestwood faced a third and 8 and Jason Swank found Dennis for 9. Sophomore running back Allen Agnon came in and scored from eight yards out for a 14-0 lead with 5:04 remaining in the third quarter. “Hats off to Allen for answering the call. He’s a great kid, he’s been good to us all year.” Arcangeli said.

After the Comet defense forced a three and out, Crestwood had a long drive that ended the third quarter. The drive concluded with a four yard touchdown run by Ethan Shudak and led 21-0 with 7:26 remaining in the game. The defense got a fumble recovery and the Comets cruised from there. Arcangeli on his team’s defensive effort. “We were embarassed and uncharacteristic last week. We expected them to come in and run in between the tackles. The defense answered tonight and played tough football.”

Western Wayne Head Coach Randy Wolff on the game. “They were more physical than us tonight. We didn’t look prepared tonight and that was on me.” The Wildcats were off last week due to a COVID situation. “I think the week off hurt us because of the speed of the game cause you can only do so much in practice.” Crestwood plays at home vs Wyoming Area. Western Wayne plays Scranton Prep at home.
