Dallas pummels past Berwick

It’s getting to that time in the Pennsylvania High School football season. Entering tonight , 6 games had already been played, and we have a sense of who teams are. These last few weeks are the most important of the regular season. Having momentum entering the playoffs is the best recipe for success.

Berwick got their 2nd win of the year last week after beating Wyoming Valley West 35-7. The Dawgs have struggled this season, but this game gave them hope. A year ago, Berwick pulled off a huge upset and derailed the Mountaineer’s perfect season. Dallas entered that game 6-0 until Berwick took them down 39-22. Coach Rich Mannello said “We never were able to recover from that game. ”

The Mountaineers came out determined to right their 2022 wrongs and continue their perfect season and get to 7-0 in 2023. The QB-WR duo of Brady Zapoticky and Zach Paczewski has been lethal 60% through the regular season, they have connected together on nine separate occasions for TDs. Dallas wants to continue their quest for home-field advantage through the District playoffs, but they will most likely have to win out to do so.

It did not take long for Dallas to strike. The opening kickoff went 92 yards and the Mountaineers were already knocking on the endzone’s doors.  QB Brady Zapoticky took it himself and got Dallas on the board just a minute into play.

After a Berwick 3-and-out, Dallas was on the hunt again. Dylan Geskey got his big night started with this run to give Dallas a two-score lead.

Just 12 minutes into the game, and it was polar opposites from a year ago. Dallas had come out and dominated and would not look back. A pair of Brady Zapoticky TD passes to Zach Paczewski and Nick Farrell respectively made it 28-0 Mountaineers at half.

Out of the 2nd half, the Dallas defense gave the ball back to the offense and they did not waste time. Dylan Geskey scored again and now the Mountaineers had put the mercy rule into Berwick.

Dallas made it 42-0, but Berwick found the endzone on a Braylon Hawkins 49-yard TD run. That would be the final score, Dallas won 42-6.

The Mountaineers are now just 3 games away from a perfect regular season. Coach Rich Mannello sees a lot of similarities between this year’s team to the 2019 team that made the state title game.  The defensive front got into the backfield quickly and was able to make it hard for QB Ethan Lear to operate. Dallas balanced the run and pass well and kept the Berwick defense guessing all night. Zach Paczewski was as advertised and so was Brady Zapoticky.  RB Dylan Geskey was money inside the 10 as he scored on multiple occasions.

This is a reality check for Berwick after a win a week ago. The bad news for the Dawgs is they possibly play their hardest opponent of the season next week in Danville. For the first time in a while, Berwick will be fighting even to make the playoffs. Their defense was unable to tackle and Dallas took advantage. An encroachment on a 4th down and a dropped pass were simple mistakes that cost Berwick.
