A tale of two polar opposites would be a good way to sum up the week 8 matchup between Berwick and Danville. In the past, Danville has not been able to beat the Dawgs, especially at Crispin Field. All the way back on September 26, 1971, was the last time Danville walked into Crispin Field and beat the Bulldogs. Although they haven’t won in Berwick in 19,010 days, they were able to grab the victory tonight.

Even though Danvile lost QB Zach Gordon to graduation last year, Junior Madden Patrick has stepped in and delivered. Entering this game, Patrick had already thrown for 25TDs in just 7 games, tonight he had one of his best nights and was electric for the Ironmen.

Berwick has struggled this season, entering the game at just 2-5. The running game has been Berwick’s strong suit so far. RB Tyler Winter has 600 yards and is averaging about 6 yards per carry. QB Ethan Lear has found his success on the ground as well, totaling over 300 yards and 5 TDs.  The offense has struggled this year with just over 16 points scored per game.

The Danville offense did waste any time getting started, just 2 minutes in and Madden Patrick found Aaron Johnson for the long score.

Another Berwick 3-and-out meant Danville was on the scent of points again. After throwing one in, Madden Patrick now ran one in. Just 8 minutes into the game and was already Danville leading by 14.

Danville kept on rolling, this Madden Patrick TD to Aaron Johnson made the game 28-0 Danville.

Already Danville had a 28-0 lead midway through the 2nd quarter.  Berwick’s Ethan Lear found Braylon Hawkins for a 60-yard bomb to give Berwick a little bit of life. That score would be the last for Berwick tonight.

Once more, Madden Patrick, this time to Cole Duffy, and Danville now led by 29.

Before the night was over, Patrick got another passing TD and former Bulldog Bo Sheptock got into the endzone in the waning moments.

Danville would dominate Berwick 49-6.

The Ironmen get to 7-1 now. Their lone loss was to Southern Columbia a few weeks back. The passing game was on point and it overwhelmed Berwick defensively.  Danville looks prime to make a run like they did last year when they were just a few games out of winning the state title.

For the 2nd time in as many weeks, the Dawgs look uncompetitive and once again got blown out. The passing game was maybe the best it’s been all year. QB Ethan Lear had a lot of time to throw and delivered some good passes. The running game struggled and RB Tyler Winter was mostly bottled up.

After the game, I spoke to Danville HC Carl Majer about his team and the fight ahead.
