Parkland Scored First and Often, Rolls over Stroudsburg

Thursday night it was the rain, last night it was the wind howling on Halloween Night in Orefield and that did not scare the Trojans one bit. As Parkland blew by Stroudsburg 49-14. The wind did not seem to affect Finn Coen, who was able to spread the ball around and connect on three touchdown passes to three different receivers. That included a sweet 80yd pass to T.J. Lawrence, who also scored twice on the ground. The defense was also a big factor creating turnovers like Liam Spang’s interception that he ran back for a touchdown or blanking Stroudsburg in the 2nd half and stalled the Mountaineers comeback attempt.

Parkland won the toss and deferred to the 2nd half. Stroudsburg started on their own 20yd line, they were able to get a 1st down on a pass from Jackson Mitchell to Kygen Damato that went 16yds, but the drive stalled after that and punted to Parkland. T.J. Lawrence returned for a touchdown that was nullified by a penalty. But T.J. got his touchdown on 1st and 10 from the 21yd line when he ran it in at 6:04 in the 1st quarter and that made the score 7-0 Trojans.

The Mountaineers next drive went a lot like their 1st one, they got a 1st down, but then the drive stalled and punted to Parkland. The Trojans did not waste, Finn Coen threw to Blake Nassry for a 25yds on 1st and ten from their own 35yd line, then T.J. Lawrence ran for 7yds to the 33yd line of Stroudsburg and finished the job and took it to the house at 2:05 in the 1st quarter. Parkland led 14-0.

Stroudsburg started again on their own 20yd line again, but this time with a little more success. On 2nd and eight from the 22yd line Keyen Johnson ran to the 35yd line of Parkland for a 1st down. He got the ball again, after Jackson Mitchell threw to Essam Airefai for 23yds to the 12yd line of Parkland. He did not make in the endzone, but on 2nd down he ran 6yds for the score 7 seconds into the 2nd quarter and that made the score 14-7.

Parklands next drive looked like they would go right down the field and score again. Gabriel Ferguson’s kick was returned by Liam Spang to their own 40yd line where the Trojans started 1st and ten. Parkland drove to the 18yd line of Stroudsburg with the help Nass Adams on 2nd and 2 from the 48yd line of Stroudsburg he ran to the 22yd line for a gain of 26yds. But unable to convert on 4th and eight from the 20yd line, turned the ball over on downs. The Mountaineers needed a long drive to even up the score, but that is not what they got. Liam Spang intercepted a Jackson Mitchell pass and returned it for a touchdown and put Parkland back up by 14points and the score was 21-7 at 8:02 in the 2nd quarter.

The next drive goes about the same as the earlier ones for Stroudsburg, able to get a 1st down, but then ran out of gas and punted to Parkland. The Trojans started with great field position at their own 44yd line and after a short pass to Jude Ruisch. Finn Coen found Nass Adams for a 50yd touchdown pass and Parkland led 28-7 with 3:27 remaining in the 2nd quarter.

The Mountaineers refused to give up, and started a long drive from their own 25yd line and drove to 5yd line of Parkland, the last 39yds came off a pass from Jackson Mitchell to Airefai Essam to the 5yd line and on 4th and goal from the 5yd line, Jackson Mitchell connected with Joshua Ivers-Green for a touchdown with 5.8 seconds left in the half and the Mountaineers cut the lead to 28-14.

Time ran out for the first half and score was 28-14 with Parkland set to receive in the 2nd half

Stroudsburg kicked off to start the 2nd half, and needed to stop Parkland on their 1st possession, to keep the Trojans within striking distance. And that almost happened, A loss of 16yds on the first play backed the Trojans up to the 15yd line after starting 1st and ten at their own 31yd line. But on 3rd and long Finn Coen found T.J. Lawrence and he took it 80yds for a touchdown and just that quick Parkland led 35-14 at 9:59 in the 3rd quarter.

That was about it for Stroudsburg, the Mountaineers were not able to sustain any drive the rest of the game. Parkland was able to get another quick score on a 3play drive that ended when Naquan Thomason ran it in from 31yds out at 1:44 in the 3rd. Trojans led 42-14.

Parkland added one more score with 39.3 seconds left in the 3rd quarter, when Finn Coen completed his 3rd touchdown pass of the game to Blake Nassry for 9yds and the score was 49-14.

That would be the final score 49-14 Parkland advances to the second round of the District11 playoffs.

John Fox caught up with T.J. Lawrence who scored 3 touchdowns.
