At last the 4A Philadelphia champion will be crowned on Saturday evening as the John Bartram Braves (5-2) of Southwest Philadelphia meet Bonner-Prendergast (8-2) who reside in nearby Upper Darby. The B-P Friars are the top 4A CL team who earned their city title berth via their wins over Cardinal O’Hara (31-12) and Archbishop Carroll (48-0). They suffered two setbacks this season with losses to Delaware Military Academy (DE) 41-12 and Neumann-Goretti (26-20). The Friars are led by Sr. RB Mason Peterson who leads the city leagues in rushing with 1492 yards, averaging over 149 yards & 18 TDs in a run dominated offense. He is the key to their offense and accounts for over 1600 total yards. The Friars are led by Sr QB Shane Mulholland has thrown for 9 TDs with 4 of those scores going to Sr. TE David Washington. The Friars average almost 27 points per game while giving up 14 points per game.

The Braves entered the 4A City Title game after a thrilling walk-off win over a feisty Boys Latin team in the PL 4A Finals Championship game. They play in the toughest division in the Public League yet finished with losses only to Northeast (34-6) and Imhotep (40-7). The Braves make their first City Title Game Appearance in 45 years after a great game winning touchdown by Sr. WR Abdul Adams sent them home with a PL Championship. Bartram defense swarms to the ball and their defensive backs are sure handed when they get their hands on balls. Their front 7 also collapses the pocket very well and quickly which allows the opposing QB’s to rush throws leading to interceptions for Bartram. Offensively the Braves offense runs through do it all Sr. QB Titus David who highly impressed with his composure in the title game with getting the ball out and finding his targets while avoiding the rush. The Braves also have a stud in Jr. Athlete Nassir Bolden who makes plays on both sides of the ball. This game will come down to limiting mistakes and has the feeling of being a very close game. Bartram has flown under the radar most of the season with not getting much press but has played great outside of their two losses. They have serious playmakers offensively and their defensive line gets after the quarterback. They’ll need to flood the box to stop the Friars vaunting rushing attack while their DB’s hold up in coverage against the dangerous David Washington & the other Friar pass catchers.

I predict this go into overtime with the Friars stealing a close win 30-28 in overtime.
