We are at Week 2 of the 2024 season and there are some teams who have played their way into the top of the city rankings while a couple have disappointed and fell out of the rankings. The season is still early so there will be much more movement in standings as the season progresses. Last week Imhotep and Roman won big while La Salle kept their winning ways going with a hard-fought victory over a talented Malvern Prep team. South Philadelphia won in an upset over then ranked MLK while George Washington earned a statement big win over John Bartram. Without further delay here are the week 2 City Rankings.
Week 2: Top 10 City Rankings:
- La Salle
- Imhotep
- Roman Catholic
- St. Joseph’s Prep
- Lincoln
- Bonner-Prendie
- Malvern Prep
- Northeast
- Haverford
- George Washington
Top Games of the Week:
- Chester v Imhotep (Saturday 3pm @Germantown Supersite): The Chester Clippers travel to Philly to take on the reigning PIAA 5A champions. With Tep now being a 6A program, these teams can schedule regular season games going forward. Chester is led by dynamic Jr. QB Jalen Harris, stud Jr. RB Darron Harris and a couple of mammoth stud tackles in Jr. OT Josiah Bynum-Smokes (6-6 345) & Sr. OT Shemaj Henry (6-8 353). Sr. Athlete Shamar Williams is another key offensive weapon for Jalen along with Jr. Athlete/WR Damon Fitzgerald. For Imhotep the offense starts with So. QB Joey McLeish who has already thrown for over 500 yards in his first two career starts under center for the Panthers. His mates Sr. RB Jabree Wallace-Coleman (Penn State commit), Jr. RB Syeer Coleman, Jr. WR Isaiah Prater, & So. WR Kareem Haqq. Defensively for Tep they’re led by Sr. Edge Zahir Mathis (Ohio State), Sr. DB Samir Locks, Jr. LB Charles Belser & Jr. DL Joseph Sondah. Chester will need to utilize Jalen’s legs while relying on their big tackles to run outside on Tep and away from Zahir. Tep will rely on what’s worked the first two weeks a steady dose of Jabree and work off play action for Joey to find his downfield targets. Chester is a pretty good team, but this Tep team is bigger, stronger & faster. Look for Tep to run away with yet another comfortable victory.
- Lansdale Catholic @ Springside Chestnut Hill Academy (Saturday 1pm):In a non-league matchup Lansdale travel to SCHA for what should be an exciting game. Lansdale QB Yeboa Cobbold Jr. leads the team offensively as he has thrown for 215 yards & 2 TDs while also leading them in rushing with 95 yards. The Defense has been stout giving up only 17 points in 2 contests led by Sr. LB Chris Ulmer (Monmouth commit). SCHA starters only played a half last week in their romp over Central, but WR Aaron Clark dominated with 142 receiving yards in the first half. Both teams have league championship aspirations and SCHA defense led by Jr. DL Sadiek Willis & Jr. DL Amari Fallen
- West Philadelphia @ Boys Latin Charter (Saturday @ 7pm): Both teams enter 0-2 after tough non-league losses in Weeks 0 & Weeks 1. Neither team has found traction on offense as West has scored a total of 16 points in 2 games while Boys Latin has scored a combined 8 points in their first two games of the season. This contest serves as a divisional matchup which means there is plenty on the line and the winner can be in control of earning the Liberty Divisional title if they can get on a roll. West will rely on the hogs upfront to control the clock & wear down the Boys Latin defense later on in the game with their rushing attack led by Sr. RB Zahfir Cleveland. For Boys Latin they’ll test West early and often with Jr. QB Jeremiah Roach leading the offense.
- St. Joseph’s Prep @ Eramus Hall (Saturday @7pm): The Prep looks to get things rolling on offense while continuing to gel and grow on defense as a unit. They were stunned last week in the first half by a good St. Edwards team 35-21 but held St. Edwards scoreless in the second half while also scoring twice to make the game interesting in the 4th quarter. So. Charlie Foulke is the man under center with Ohio State commit RB Isaiah West serving as the bell cow for Prep this season. Charlie has a quartet of capable passing targets in Fr. WR Jett Harrison, Sr. WR Rameir Hardy (Temple), Sr. WR Jamir Rowe & Sr. WR Alijah Turner. Defensively they’re paced by Sr. LB Anthony Sacca (Notre Dame), Sr. LB Cam Smith (Penn State), Jr. DL Alex Haskell & Sr. DB Ryan McDonald.
- Frankford @ South Philadelphia (Friday @7pm): The Pioneers got their first win of the season with a 28-7 win over Fels last week while South Philly got their first win of the season with an upset 3-0 win over Martin Luther King. South Philadelphia last week showed how stingy their defense can be while Frankford has shown they can put up points in bunches through the air.
