It all comes down to this one, and it’s been building up since the opening weekend in District 2. A head-to-head matchup of 2 juggernauts with the District 2 Class 3A Championship on the line. Let’s take a look at both teams heading into this huge game!
Wyoming Area (11-1)
PFN State Class 3A #10 ranked
The Warriors are playing inspired ball heading into the title game. Head Coach Randy Spencer’s squad is playing at a high level and has gotten healthy on both sides of the ball, and that starts with the Lines. Senior OL/DL Chase DeSanto leads the group and has already committed to play for Sacred Heart starting next season. Senior RB Lidge Kellum has been off-the-charts explosive this year having amassed 2158 rushing yards and 30 TD’s, including 5 scores last week in the OT thriller win at Western Wayne. Senior RB Michael Crane is healthy again and always seems to find a way to gain the tough yards and make the tough blocks. Senior QB Anthony DeLucca has played well, throwing for 1314 yards and 18 TD’s, Senior WR Kevin Wiedl is playing great in all phases and Sophomore Luke Kopetchny has excelled this year with 11 TD’s.
Scranton Prep (11-1)
PFN State Class 3A #6 ranked
This season has gone well for the Cavaliers. With their only loss coming against NY powerhouse Canisius, and big wins against stalwarts Loyola-Blakefield (MD) and Jersey Shore, Head Coach Terry Gallagher’s crew is battle-tested heading into the post-season. The Cavaliers Senior QB Louis Paris has been here before and is a terrific dual-threat, rushing for 1009 yards with 15 TD’s and throwing for 1235 yards and 10 TD’s. Junior RB Will McPartland has been outstanding in the wildcat formation and also as a receiver. Senior WR Treyvon Dickey is explosive both rushing and receiving, and both he and McPartland are tough to deal with in the defensive secondary. Senior WR Brady Holmes has made some big plays this year. And watch out for Senior LB’s Reese Tanner and Jack Doughton patrolling the middle.
Outlook:
Wyoming Area likes to establish their run game early to take pressure off of Delucca and open up their short-to-mid range passing game. A key to this game could very well be the comeback route that Delucca & Kopetchny are able to execute very efficiently. They will need to keep the Scranton Prep offense off the field if they hope to emerge victorious. On defense, the Warriors will have a different look coming at them than they are used to seeing, with the Cavaliers using multiple formations and several different backs to gain yards. Winning the battle at the line of scrimmage against the Cavalier front will be a deciding factor.
Scranton Prep will need to establish defensive dominance early and then rely on their offense to do what they do best: use a number of different skill players to move downfield and score. Paris has been here before and knows what to do to lead this team. The added dimension that McPartland brings to the table is crucial to the Cavaliers success, and this could be a game where a breakout play from Dickey could be the clincher. On defense, the key will be to have the balance between staying home to stop Kellum vs. defending the effective passing game of the Warriors. As I stated above, if the Delucca/Kopetchny comeback route starts working well, the Cavalier defense will need to be on their toes the entire game.
Prediction:
2 playoff thrillers in a row for me? Yes please!
