District 9 Review – Week 5

The game of the week:   There were two fantastic games last week in District Nine.  The premier game was Cameron County’s fourth quarter comeback to down Bucktail 30-28.  The Red Raiders were down 22-6 at one point in the third quarter and 28-14 with 7 and a half minutes to go.  A touchdown, a defensive stop, and Maddox Baughman’s one-yard run with just over a minute remaining gave Cameron County the improbable win.

It was Beau Thomas’s 2-yard touchdown run with about 8 minutes left in the game that lifted Punxsutawney to a 25-24 triumph over DuBois.  The game saw five lead changes, three in the first quarter.  Punxsy led at halftime 18-17, but the Beavers had the only score in the third to go ahead 24-18.  A missed field goal by DuBois in the fourth gave the Chucks some life which resulted in the winning score.  Then Punxsy’s defense came up big twice in the final eight minutes to preserve the win.

 Here are the top performers of the week, along with a couple other tidbits:

Quarterbacks:

  • Jase Ferguson, Central Clarion, threw for 208 yards and 4 scores. He also ran for a TD and returned a fumble for a touchdown.
  • Will Domico, Clearfield, threw for 208 yards and 3 TDs.
  • Gavyn Ayers, Coudersport, rushed for 3 TDs, passed for 2 more and had a pick six.
  • Shane Magee, Otto-Eldred, threw for 3 touchdowns.
  • Braylon Wagner, Redbank Valley, accounted for 4 TDs by passing for 3 and running for another.
  • Maddox Baughman, Cameron County, threw 3 touchdown passes and ran in the winning score with 1:17 left in the game.
  • Nick Wilfong, Port Allegany, pitched 4 touchdown passes.
  • Aiden Patton, Brockway, threw for 232 yards and 3 touchdowns.
  • Brody Pentz, Bucktail, ran for 174 yards from his QB position.
  • Talan Reese, Bradford, had 242 yards passing and fired 5 TDs.
  • Maddox Hetrick, Punxsutawney, passed for 264 yards.

Receivers:

  • Jake Franz, Bradford, had 109 yards receiving and caught 4 TD passes.
  • Carter Freeland, Clearfield, had 165 yards catching passes and scored twice.
  • Beau Thomas, Punxsutawney, had 162 receiving yards on 6 catches.

Running Backs:

  • Eli Nellis, Keystone, scored 3 touchdowns, two on runs and snagged an 83-yard TD pass.

Defense and Special Teams:

  • Gavyn Ayers, Coudersport, had a 27-yard pick six to give him 6 touchdowns accounted for on the evening.
  • Mike Smith, Sheffield, returned an interception 50 yards for a TD.
  • Shene Thomas, Otto-Eledred had a 37-yard pick six TD.
  • Sam Krug, Brookville, had a 32-yard INT return for a touchdown.
  • Kaden Clark, DuBois, ran a kickoff back 92 yards for a score.
  • Evan Whitmore, Bradford, had 15 tackles.
  • Landon Martz, Punxsutawney, had 9 tackles.
  • Tony Certiani, Brookville, returned a fumble 25 yards for a TD.
  • Kellen Veilleux, Port Allegany, had a pick six.
  • Ashton Kahle, Redbank Valley, returned a punt 66 yards for a score when he took a lateral from Mason Clouse.

Other Notes:

  • Fifteen D-9 teams have a .500 record or better.
  • There are five quarterbacks that have thrown for more than 1,000 yards and have at least 9 TD passes in the first six games. They are Braylon Wagner (Redbank), Jase Ferguson (Central Clarion), Maddox Hetrick (Punxsy), Will Domico (Clearfield), and Talan Reese (Bradford).

  • Clearfield (5-1) at Bald Eagle Area (6-0)
  • Karns City (3-3) at Punxsy (4-2)
