District 9 Review – Week 6

The game of the week: It had to be the St. Marys at DuBois overtime thriller won by DuBois 21-14.  The Beavers trailed 14-7 until there were 7 minutes remaining in the game.  That was when they tied the game.  Eventually DuBois got the ball back with a minute to go.  A 36-yard defensive fumble return for a touchdown appeared to give the Flying Dutchmen the go-ahead score, but the officials had a discussion and decided the fumble was a forward pass by the QB and negated the St. Marys touchdown.  In overtime, DuBois scored on 4th down to go up 21-14 and then the Beaver defense stopped a 4th down run by St. Marys just short of the goal line to secure the win.

Here are the top performers of the week, along with a couple other tidbits:

Quarterbacks:

  • Jase Ferguson, Central Clarion, had 3 touchdown passes.
  • Braylon Wagner, Redbank Valley, threw for 249 yards and tied a Redbank record by passing for 7 touchdowns in one game.
  • Gavyn Ayers, Coudersport, rushed for 4 TDs.
  • Shane Magee, Otto-Eldred, threw for 361 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also ran for a couple more scores.
  • Brayden Fox, Brockway, threw for 288 yards and 4 touchdowns.
  • Brody Pentz, Bucktail, had 258 all-purpose yards and accounted for 3 TDs, one passing and two rushing.
  • Cameron Larkin, Ridgway, accounted for 5 touchdowns as he threw for 3 and ran for 2.

Receivers:

  • Matthew Brubaker, Brockway, had 134 yards receiving and scored 3 TDs on 7 catches.
  • Blake Pisarcik, Brockway, had 130 receiving yards.
  • Manning Splain, Otto-Eldred, snagged 9 passes for 239 yards and a pair of TDs.
  • Beau Thomas, Punxsutawney, scored 3 touchdowns, although one was via the ground.

Running Backs:

  • Aiden Bliss, Port Allegany, scored 3 touchdowns.
  • Peyton Stiles, Port Allegany, also scored 3 TDs.

Defense and Special Teams:

  • Viggio Brown, Coudersport, took down 12 opposing ball carriers.
  • Owen Roundsville, Smethport, returned a punt 70 yards for a TD.
  • Logan Moore, Punxsutawney, had an 83-yard kickoff return TD.
  • Jack Pete, Brookville, had a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and a 70-yard punt return touchdown.
  • Logan Kohler, Bradford, took a kickoff 93 yards for a score.
  • Braylon Beckwith, Central Clarion, returned a fumble 20 yards for a TD.
  • Mason Clouse, Redbank Valley, had a 23-yard pick six.
  • Thomas Ukert, Central Clarion, booted a perfect 10 for 10 on PATs.

Other Notes:

  • Eleven D-9 teams still have a .500 record or better. Two are undefeated in Redbank Valley and Central Clarion.
  • Clearfield is in the midst of a four-game gauntlet that featured them playing three undefeated teams and a one-loss team. The Bison beat Penns Valley, the one-loss team two weeks ago and last week upended BEA, the first of the three unbeatens.  This week they travel to Johnstown to take on the 7-0 Richland Rams who are ranked 3rd in the state in Class AA by PFN.  Next week they tackle Central-Martinsburg.
  • Brody Pentz, the quarterback for Bucktail (a District Four team playing in the District Nine league) went over 1,000 yards rushing for the year last week. He is the 12th player in the history of Bucktail’s program to do so.

Games of the Week:

  • Clearfield (6-1) at Richland (7-0)
  • Port Allegany (6-1) at Redbank Valley (6-1)
