District Nine Review and Standings – Week 5

| September 27, 2022

The Ridgway Elkers gave Redbank Valley and their faithful fans a scare last week before falling to the Bulldogs 42-33.  Clearfield appears to be gaining steam as they won their 4th straight easily over a tough Penns Valley squad.  Union/AC Valley seems to be hitting the right notes after a big stumble out of the gates.  And don’t look know, but Port Allegany is a player in Region 2.  Central Clarion in Region 1, Redbank in Region 2, and Elk County Catholic in Region 3 remain undefeated half way through the 2022 campaign.

Here are the top performers for the week:

Quarterbacks (threw for over 200 yards and/or 2 or more touchdowns) – Cam Wagner (Redbank Valley) was once again quarterback of the week as he threw for 314 yards and 5 TDs.  For the season, young Mr. Wagner has pitched the pigskin for 1,353 yards and 22 touchdowns in just 5 games.  Jase Ferguson (Central Clarion), Eric Booher (Karns City), and Charlie Coudriet (St. Marys) all threw 3 touchdown passes.  Coudriet accounted for 259 yards passing and running the ball.  Curwensville’s Dan McGarry was responsible for 3 touchdowns as well as he threw for 2 and ran for another in accumulating 283 yards of offense between passing and rushing the rock.  Cam Larkin of Ridgway accounted for 3 TDs too.  He ran for 2 and passed for the other.  Cam-Ron Hays (DuBois), Easton Belfiore (Brookville), and Kyle Zook (Kane) all tossed 2 TD passes.

Running Backs (ran for over 100 yards and/or scored 2 or more touchdowns) – Noah Cherry had 5 touchdown runs and traversed the field for 129 yards for his Elk County Catholic Crusaders.  Port Allegany’s Blaine Moses carried the agate for 152 yards and scored 4 touchdowns in the Gators’ big win over Brockway.  Xander Brown of Coudersport ran for 144 yards and 3 scores.  Keystone teammates Kyle Nellis and Tyler Albright both rambled for over 100 yards.  Nellis had 140 and scored 3 times, while Albright had 111.  Other 100-yard rushers include Brady Collins (Clearfield) with 197, Dawson Camper (Union/AC Valley) with 130, and Connor Kopnitsky (Central Clarion) with 123.  Camper and his mate in the backfield, Mikey Card both scored 2 rushing touchdowns.  One other note as far as running backs go.  Zeke Bennett of Punxsy became the Chucks’ career rushing leader this past week.  He now has 2,170 yards and broke a record that stood for over 30 years.

Wide Receivers (over 100 yards in receptions and/or 2 or more TDs) – Aiden Ortz of Redbank had 138 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Fellow Bulldog, Ashton Kahle had 107 yards in receptions and also had 2 TDs.  Logan Mosier of St. Marys hauled down 10 passes for 150 yards and a pair of scores.  Ashton Rex of Central Clarion snagged passes for 121 yards.  In addition to running for over 100 yards, Keystone’s Albright caught 2 TD tosses.

Special Teams and Defense – An 83-yard punt return gave Logan Mosier 3 TDs for his St. Marys Flying Dutch.  Kaden Dennis of Ridgway returned a kickoff 81 yards to the house.  Carsen Rupp of Redbank and Drew Slaugenhaupt of Keystone had pick sixes.

Top Games for the Upcoming Week – The big games in D-9 this week are Karns City at Central Clarion and Coudersport at Elk County Catholic.  Both Central Clarion and Elk County will put their 5-0 records on the line against a pretty good opponent.  Karns City and Central Clarion will be a contrast in styles so to speak.  The Gremlins love to run and pound the ball, while the Wildcats like to throw and at times throw deep.
