District Nine Review and Standings – Week 6

| October 4, 2022

Some really good games occurred in District 9 this past Friday.  In one of the better games of the year, Central Clarion put their 5-0 record on the line against Karns City.  The game was tied at 20 after 3 quarters and stayed that way as the 4th quarter ended sending the contest into overtime.  K.C. fumbled the ball away on their possession.  Clarion’s Ryan Hummell then ran in from the 8-yard line to win the game for the Wildcats 26-20.

There are 3 more games worth mentioning.  Brookville trailed St. Marys 19-7 heading into the 4th quarter, but scored 2 touchdowns to take the lead 22-19.  Very late in the game St. Marys drove into Brookville territory, but had a pass intercepted at the 20.  Following a similar pattern, Ridgway scored a pair of 4th quarter touchdowns to grab the lead away from Keystone 26-20.  The Elkers then picked off a Panther pass in the end zone as time was winding down to preserve the win.  Curwensville found themselves down at halftime to West Branch 32-19, but held the Warriors scoreless in the second half and scored two TDs.  But alas, the Golden Tide missed both PATs and lost 32-31.

Here are the top performers for the week:

Quarterbacks (threw for over 200 yards and/or 2 or more touchdowns) – Andrew Schenfield of Otto-Eldred had a nice game when he threw for 255 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Talon Reese of Bradford aired it out for 238 yards and 2 TDs.  Jase Ferguson helped his Central Clarion Wildcats get to overtime with 209 yards passing and 2 TD tosses.  He also ran for 138 yards and a score.  Sheffield’s Colby Barr chalked up 201 yards passing and had a couple of TD throws.  Cam Wagner (Redbank Valley) threw for 3 TDs.  Drew Evens of Port Allegany rushed for 3 touchdowns.  Curwensville’s Dan McGarry was responsible for 4 touchdowns when he threw for 3 and ran for another.  Charlie Coudriet of St. Marys threw for 2 scores and ran for 1 TD.

Running Backs (ran for over 100 yards and/or scored 2 or more touchdowns) – Clearfield’s Brady Collins rushed for 224 yards and found the end zone 3 times.  Brady’s teammate, Carter Chamberlain also scored 3 touchdowns as he ran for 115 yards.  Brookville’s Jackson Zimmerman covered 202 yards and scored the 2 4th quarter TDs to win the game for the Blue Raiders.  Jendy Cuello of Brockway ran for 175 yards, while fellow Rover Dylan Hanna scored 3 times (once on a pass reception).  Otto’s Hunter App had the same trifecta, 2 TDs via the ground and 1 via the pass.  Curwensville’s Chase Irwin had 117 yards rushing, scoring once by ground and once by air.  Redbank’s Drew Byers galloped for 106 yards and 2 TDs.  Punxsy’s Justin Miller had 2 touchdowns, as did Tyler Albright of Keystone.  Cameron County’s Malaki Zucal rushed for 110 yards, Bucktail’s Tanner Pettingill 147, and Moniteau’s Hunter Stalker 156.

Special Teams and Defense – Albright (Keystone) had a 3rd touchdown when he returned a kickoff 90 yards.  Zach Kelly of Karns City also had a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.  And Peyton Stiles of Port Allegany returned a kickoff to the house too.  Cooper Coyle (Karns City) had 2 picks against Central Clarion.  Coudersport registered its third straight shutout when they gave Elk County their first loss of the season, 6-0.

Top Games for the Upcoming Week – Clearfield (5-1) hosts Tyrone (5-1) in a huge Mountain League contest.  Keystone (4-2) travels to Brockway (3-3) in what could be a high-scoring affair.  Port Allegany (5-1) comes south to meet Union/AC Valley (3-3) in what could be a trap game for the Gators as they will host Redbank Valley next week.  St. Marys (4-2) will play host to the DuBois Beavers (4-2), and Otto-Eldred (4-2) takes on Coudersport (4-2) in Coudy.
