District Nine Review and Standings – Week 8

Just like the week before, another trio of great games were played Friday.  Port Allegany gave Redbank Valley their first loss of the season by beating the Bulldogs 8-7.  Redbank and Port were scoreless heading to the 4th quarter.  Redbank took the 7-0 lead after they stopped Port on fourth down at the ten.  On third down, Redbank scored on a 90-yard pass from Braylon Wagner to Tate Minich.  The Gators drove 65 yards in 11 plays and scored on Peyton Stiles’ 6-yard run with 3:02 left.  Then QB Drew Evens ran in the 2-point conversion for the win.

Curwensville lost 28-27 in overtime to Conemaugh Valley.  Dan McGarry’s pass to Hunter Tkacik tied the game at 20 for the Golden Tide as time ran out, but they missed what would’ve been the game-winning PAT.  In OT, Curwensville scored first and made the PAT.  Conemaugh answered with a score of their own, went for two, and made it to give them the victory.

Otto-Eldred trailed Bucktail 36-26 in the last quarter and Bucktail was driving to put the game away.  Then it happened.  With 6 minutes to go Braxton Caldwell stepped in front of a Bucktail pass for and returned it 86 yards to the house.  The 2-point conversion made it 36-34 Bucktail.  The Terrors’ defense then forced a punt and with a little over 3:00 left Andrew Schenfield’s pass to Max Splain gave O-E an improbable triumph.

Here are the top performers for the week:

Quarterbacks (threw for over 200 yards and/or 2 or more touchdowns) – Jase Ferguson helped his Central Clarion team bury DuBois by throwing for 313 yards and 3 TDs.  He also ran for a pair of TDs.  Andrew Schenfield of Otto-Eldred had quite a performance when he threw for 281 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Dan McGarry (Curwensville) and Brayden Fox (Brockway) threw for 3 scores.  Brody Dittman of Union/AC Valley and Charlie Coudriet of St. Marys both accounted for 3 TDs, 1 passing and 2 running.

Running Backs (ran for over 100 yards and/or scored 2 or more touchdowns) – Tanner Pettingill of Bucktail had 207 yards rushing, plus he scored 4 touchdowns.  Coudersport’s Ethan Ott had himself a nice game running for 212 yards.  Griffin White of Punxsy ran for 180 yards and 2 scores.  Brookville’s Jackson Zimmerman raced to the end zone 3 times.  Noah Peterson of Brookville had 109 yards on the ground.  Aidan Sell of Keystone had 165 yards and 2 touchdowns, while running mate Kyle Nellis had 102 yards and 2 TDs.  Jendy Cuello of Brockway had 160 yards rushing.  Clearfield had a trio of backs on the honor roll.  Brady Collins had 134 yards scoring twice (1 rush and 1 pass catch), Carter Freeland scored 2 TDs, and Carter Chamberlain had 2 touchdowns.

Wide Receivers (over 100 yards in receptions and/or 2 or more TDs) – Central Clarion had a couple wide outs in the news.  Ashton Rex had 149 yards receiving and Dawson Smail had 107 yards and 2 TDs.  Carter Chadsey of St. Marys had 134 yards, the Splains of Otto-Eldred, Manning and Max had 131 yards and 110 yards respectively, and Tate Minich of Redbank had 112.  Brockway’s Alex Carlson caught a pair of TD tosses.

Special Teams and Defense – Union/AC Valley’s Ryan Cooper had a 42-yard pick six and returned a punt 25 yards for a TD.  He caught a TD pass to score his third TD of the evening.  Braxton Caldwell of Otto-Eldred ran his interception back 86 yards which sparked the Terrors comeback win over Bucktail.  The Coudersport defense held Sheffield to -11 total yards in the Falcons’ 30-7 win.

Top Games for the Upcoming Week – Central Clarion (8-0) will put its unbeaten record on the line by travelling to St. Marys (6-2) this Friday.   The C.C. Wildcats average over 40 points a game, but the Flying Dutch can put up points too.  Central Clarion is favored, but St. Marys just might surprise.  Port Allegany (7-1), fresh off their big win over Redbank Valley, will travel to Keystone (5-3).  It’s a long trip and letdowns happen coming off big wins, plus Keystone is a tough out.  It’s probably going to be a close game.  In what could be a real dog fight, Brockway’s Rovers (5-3) will make a journey to New Bethlehem to play the Bulldogs of Redbank Valley (7-1).  Finally, in the battle for the Route 36 Trophy the Punxsutawney Chucks (4-4) take a short drive to Brookville to take on the Blue Raiders (4-4).
