District Nine Tidbits

And then there were three.  Undefeated teams that is.  Clearfield, Kane, and Smethport were knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten last week.  Bellefonte took out Clearfield, while Clarion did in Kane and Redbank Valley stopped Smethport.  Clarion and Redbank improved to 6-0, joining Coudersport as the only unblemished squads in D-9.

This week finds Curwensville (1-5) at Redbank where the Bulldogs should go to 7-0.  Clarion visits Ridgway (5-1) in what has the makings of being a great game.   Coudersport treks to Duke Center to tackle Otto-Eldred (1-5).  The Falcons should remain unbeaten in that tussle.

On the other end of the spectrum, who would have ever guessed (especially 40 years ago) that Bradford, Cameron County, DuBois, and Punxsutawney would all be winless 6 games into any season.  Either the Owls or the Chucks will have a win after this Friday as they do battle in Bradford.  DuBois hosts Ft. LeBoeuf (3-3) and Cameron County heads to Smethport (4-1).

Individual statistics after most teams’ 6th game (Cameron Co., Coudersport, and Smethport have only played 5) are as follows.  The top three in passing yardage are Alex Kovalyak of Dubois with 1,453 yards. Christian Coudriet of St. Marys with 1,423 yards, and Cole Sebastian of Otto-Eldred with 1,255 markers.  The quarterbacks with the most touchdown passes are Cal German of Clarion with 16, followed by Sebastian’s 15.  Coudriet and Isaak Jones of Keystone have 12 apiece to tie for third.

The leading rushers in D-9 are Clarion’s Austin Newcomb (937 yards), Anthony Kamenski of Karns City (691 yards), and Elk County Catholic’s Sam Kaul (686 yards).  Newcomb has crossed the goal line, running the ball, 15 times.  Oliver Billotte, Clearfield’s sophomore QB, has hit pay dirt 11 times.  And Travis Gleason of Coudersport has 10 TDs.

Ethan Burford of Clarion has a total of 721 receiving yards, while Ian Thrush of Brrokville has 662 and Jake Lezzer of Clearfield is up to 590.  Burford has 11 TD receptions, Thrush 7, and Otto-Eldred’s Ethan Smith has 6.  Thrush has hauled in 47 passes to date, Lezzer 39, and Bruce Walker of St. Marys 36.

Clarion has scored the most points so far, 279 and Coudersport has allowed the fewest at 14.  On the flip side, Bradford has only scored 19 points in 6 contests, while Punxsy has given up 313.  Ridgway has the best point differential with 212, having scored 263 and only given up 51.  Punxsy is the worst at -267.

Rumor has it there may be a big change come the 2020 season.  Stay tuned.
