DT East v Boyertown by PAFootball Newsdotcom

Julez Robinson’s 78-yard explosion to the outside with 5:29 to go in the second quarter put an early exclamation point on what would be a 28-0 victory for the Downingtown East Cougars on the road at Boyertown.

Robinson went on to finish the half with 178 yards and two scores, setting the tone with hard runs and explosive breakaway speed. Just as impressive was a Cougars defense that held Boyertown to under 100 total yards on the game and saw the Bears run only six plays in Downington territory all night.

John Morrin got the scoring started on Downingtown East’s second drive, powering 35 yards to the end zone with 8:39 to go in the first quarter. Tilman Henley got his team out near midfield in a bid to respond, but the Bears added no yards and had to punt on 4th & 10 from there.

Luke Hagan had one of the better defensive plays of the night for Boyertown, sacking Cougars QB Ethan Ellis, which eventually led to a 4th & 33 situation fo the Cougars. But once Downingtown had the ball back, it took them only four plays before Robinson was off to the races for a 28-yard touchdown. With a 14-0 lead, the Cougars forced a quick Bears punt and scored three plays later when Robinson broke down the far sideline for a 78-yard touchdown.

Downingtown East got the ball back one more time in the first half with 2:38 to play. Running the 2-minute offense to perfection, they put together a 14-play, 70-yard drive, culminating in a 5-yard touchdown pass from Ellis to Mike Schlachter with 1.6 seconds left.

The Cougars also got the ball to start the second half and nearly put this game into the mercy rule. But Logan Hermann snagged an interception to avoid further scoring. Unfortunately, the only highlights of the second half after this interception were six punts and two turnovers on downs, as neither team threatened again. The teams combined for one additional first down in the final 20 minutes of game time.

Julez Robinson finished with 25 carries for 202 yards and two scores. John Morrin ran six times for 111 yards and a score.

Downingtown East will next be in action when they host Great Valley next Friday night. Boyertown will look to bounce back at home against Methacton.
