The DuBois Beavers and the General McLane Lancers gave the fans some excitement on a warm Saturday afternoon at EJ Mansell Stadium in Beavertown. Both teams combined for 13 touchdowns and 980 total yards for the day in a game that lasted almost three hours. DuBois scored the last 21 points and came away with the 56-35 victory.
Offensive shows are not unusual for the DuBois Beavers as over the years they have been involved in some pretty high scoring affairs, including the now famous 109-90 loss to Meadville. But the Beavers were the victors in this one because of the play of their all-state quarterback, Trey Wingard, and a brand new set of wide receivers that may even be better than last year’s dependable wideouts.

Trey Wingard (#10 on far right) about to hit a receiver. He was 22 for 35 on the day with 400 yards passing and 6 TD tosses.
All Mr. Wingard did was throw for 400 yards and 6 touchdowns. He added another score when he ducked into the end zone on a 4-yard run. Five different receivers caught passes with Jaxson Hanzely hauling in 8 passes for 214 yards and 3 touchdowns. Hanzely’s brother, Thacher, grabbed five passes for 73 yards and a score.
TJ Wingard, the DuBois head coach said, “Receivers had a chip on their shoulder. Rightfully so. Let’s face it, we knew what we graduated. And these guys were like, ‘hey what about us, we’re over here.’ They want to put up some good stuff. They had a great day today.”
The game was a see-saw show for the first two and a half quarters before DuBois was able to get aligned fast enough to keep up with the fast-paced offense of McLane, plus the coaches challenged the defense to tackle better and be more physical.

DuBois opened the scoring, but then McLane answered with two TDs of their own to take a 14-7 lead after one period. The Beavers countered by scoring three straight second quarter touchdowns to go on top 28-14. But the Lancers did not quit, instead they scored twice to tie the game, the second one coming with 11 ticks left in the half.
Then, one of the keys to the game happened. McLane’s head coach, Marshall McCormick, decided to rely on his kickoff team to kick it deep and cover. Jaxson Hanzely fumbled the ball and it rolled to within an inch of going out of bounds. Hanzely finally picked up the ball dodged a couple tacklers, found a hole and went 93 yards to put DuBois up 35-28 on the last play of the half. “It changed everything for us,” stated Wingard, “and credit to them they came right down the field and scored (to open the 3rd quarter).”
“First of all, that’s a good football team over there. The quarterback’s the real deal,” stated McCormick, “We had an opportunity to get the momentum back, we tied the score with 10 seconds left. And then the third phase of the game wasn’t where it needed to be. We let up a 90-yard kickoff return.”
To McLane’s credit as Wingard stated, they came out in the third quarter and drove down the field to tie the game again, this time at 35. But that was all she wrote for the Lancers’ offense as the DuBois defense started to catch on to the speed of the McLane offense and they appeared to tackle a bit better too.
The Beavers scored two more touchdowns in the third stanza to lead 49-35 heading to the fourth quarter. After DuBois had retaken the lead at 42-35, General McLane went for it on 4th down and five at the Beaver 25 and did not make it giving the home team a short field which they took advantage of. Coach McCormick took responsibility for that as it was supposed to be a non-play, just a call to try to pull DuBois offside.
The Beavers added one more TD in the 4th quarter and settled in playing a tougher defense, not allowing the Lancers to score on any of their last four drives.
McLane was led by quarterback Matt Caro who pitched the pigskin for 263 yards and 3 touchdowns. Kyle McConnell caught 5 passes for 100 yards and a pair of scores for the visitors. Cohen Beachly ran for 86 yards to lead all rushers. He also tallied a touchdown.
DuBois will host 1-0 Punxsy next Friday while McLane will play at 0-1 Harbor Creek. “That’s a good football team. They are going to win a lot of football games in District 10,” said Wingard.
