DuBois Posts Easy Victory Over Bradford

The DuBois Beavers came to play Friday night before a nice sized home crowd at Mansell Stadium.  Clicking on all cylinders, DuBois scored a touchdown on nine straight drives after punting on their first possession and defeated the Bradford Owls 61-7.  Quarterback Trey Wingard pitched the pigskin for 266 yards and 5 TDs to show the way offensively for the Beavers.  But plenty of other Beaver skill players did quite well also.  We will get to those plays and players momentarily.

This game was billed as a battle of two of the top quarterbacks in District 9, Talan Reese of Bradford and Wingard of DuBois.  But the Beaver defense put a lot of pressure on Reese, sacking him 3 times, and forcing him to scramble 4 other times.  Still, he was 11 of 17 for 166 yards and accounted for Bradford’s lone touchdown.  DuBois Coach TJ Wingard said this about Reese, “He’s very good.  He’s going to go to the next level and be special.”

Bradford’s Talan Reese #12.

The contest started out even as both teams punted on their first possession.  Bradford then drove to the DuBois 12-yard line before a pair of penalties and a pair of sacks forced the Owls to turn the ball over on downs.  From there it was all DuBois as Wingard, who had misfired on his first 3 passes (one was dropped), got hot.  Wingard fired two touchdowns passes in the last two minutes of the first quarter to get things going for the Beavers.

The first play DuBois ran in the second quarter, Carter Wilson took a handoff from Wingard in what looked like a simple dive.  When he broke free of the line, he had clear sailing as he put on the after burners racing 87 yards for the score.  Wingard followed that up by throwing for three touchdowns in the last 5:20 of the second quarter with the third one coming on a 69-yard pass to Isaiah Korney with just ten seconds left in the half and just 17 seconds after Bradford scored their only touchdown of the game.

Trey Wingard of DuBois (in black), left side of action, is about to connect on one of five TD passes.

Danny Dixon found a seam and sped 63 yards for the Beaver touchdown on the first play of the third quarter which put the Mercy Rule into effect.  Dixon led all runners with 90 yards rushing and he did it on only four carries.  Backup running backs Samson Deeb and London Duncan closed out the scoring for DuBois.  Duncan is only a freshman and looks like he has a very bright football future.

Wingard completed passes to five different receivers.  Korney caught two passes for 92 yards and two TDs.  Nathan Kougher snared five passes for 93 yards and two scores.

“Our kids played great.  I was proud of these guys tonight.  They did a really good job,” stated Coach Wingard about what he thought of the team’s performance and the defense keeping the potent Owl passing attack in check.

DuBois amassed 573 yards of offense to Bradford’s 225.  The game was called with 7:37 remaining when the referees saw lightning and the coaches agreed to end the game rather than wait the required 30 minutes after lightning is spotted.

The DuBois Marching Band put on an admirable halftime performance and the cheerleaders were enthusiastic throughout the game.

Next week, DuBois, now 2-1, travels to Karns City, while Bradford, who fell to 1-2, hosts St. Marys.
