DuBois Spanks Mifflin County, Wingard has Record Night

On a chilly Halloween night, the DuBois Beavers, led by quarterback Trey Wingard, got off to a fast start and never looked back in collaring the Mifflin County Huskies 48-21 at Mansell Stadium in DuBois. The contest was a District 6-8-9 subregional Class 5A semi-final playoff game.

Mr. Wingard, who leads the state in passing yardage and touchdowns, threw for 279 yards and 5 touchdowns.  Along the way, he set new school records in career completions and single season touchdown tosses.

Beaver head coach TJ Wingard commented on the quick start by his team, “very obviously we wanted to be sharp and take advantage of our opportunities.  They executed in that first quarter pretty hard.  I’ll take that execution every time.”

DuBois scored the first four times they had the ball to jump out to a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter thanks to Wingard and his corps of wide receivers.  On successive drives, the senior quarterback threw touchdown passes to Thacher Hanzely, Nick Roman, Jaxson Hanzely, and Samson Deeb.  Wingard’s pass to Deeb was his 519th career completion, breaking the school’s career completion record of 518.  The DuBois quarterback finished the game with 523 career completions.

“Mid week in practice we picked it up a lot and I felt going into this game we were going to do well,” stated Trey Wingard.  When asked how he felt about setting a couple more school records Wingard said, “Really good, really good.  But don’t want to stop there.  Next week we got a lot more to do.”

At that point in the game the Beavers had accumulated 277 yards of offense, while the Huskies had a grand total of 4 offensive yards.

Then something happened and Mifflin County, led by their senior quarterback Chase Hartung, began to click on offense at least in the passing department.  The Husky run game was held in check throughout the game by the DuBois defense.

Hartung propelled the Huskies on a 69-yard, 5 minute drive by hitting 3 passes for 65 yards.  Brandon Kauffman scored the first Mifflin County touchdown on a 1-yard sweep around the left side.

Two more times, late in the half, the Mifflin County Huskies had the ball in the red zone but were denied any points by the aggressive DuBois defense.  With three and a half minutes left DuBois fumbled the snap on a punt and Mifflin County took over at the Beaver 24.  A ten yard penalty and a 3-yard run put the pigskin at the DuBois eleven, but the next three plays netted a minus yard for the visitors.

Five seconds later Mifflin County had the ball again when Corbin Yoder pounced on a fumble by one of the DuBois running backs.  But four plays netted minus two yards and DuBois escaped into the intermission with a 28-7 lead.  “The defense stepped up and smothered them and going into the locker room that was huge.  I was very proud of our defense tonight,” stated Coach Wingard.

Trey Wingard threw his 5th touchdown pass of the game and single season school record breaking 42nd TD toss of the year to Thacher Hanzely in the third quarter to increase the Beaver lead to 34-7.  But Kauffman’s second TD run of a yard a couple minutes later gave the Huskies a bit of life as they trailed 34-14 heading into the last quarter.

Half way through the final stanza, Hartung threw a 2-yard, 4th down TD pass to Kyson Russler cutting the Beaver margin to 34-21.  The Huskies recovered the ensuing onsides kick in DuBois territory, but the referees ruled they touched the ball one yard short of going the required 10 yard distance.

After a 5-yard penalty, London Duncan found a hole and raced 44 yards to ice the game for the Beavers.  To top it off, Mifflin County drove inside the DuBois ten before Jaxson Hanzely grabbed his second interception of the game and returned it 105 yards for a touchdown with a couple dozen ticks left on the clock to set the final at 48-21.  Officially it was only 100 yards as high school rules do not recognize anything longer, even though it could be.

Hartung completed 22 of 37 passes to a variety of receivers.  Those 22 completions went for 268 yards.  Mifflin County was held to 78 total yards in the first half with 74 coming on their scoring drive.  Some adjustments were made including throwing more in the second half and they gained 198 yards in the second half of the game.

DuBois had 387 yards for the game with 292 coming in the first half.  Jaxson Hanzely led the receivers with 7 catches for 117 yards.  London Duncan quietly had a nice game by running for 105 yards and snaring two passes for 44 yards.

When asked about his son setting some more school records, Coach Wingard said, “football is a team sport and that doesn’t happen without ten other guys on the field.  We’re proud of all these guys tonight.  Just happy with obviously the results and we’re going to get another crack at Hollidaysburg.”

DuBois moves their record to 7-4, while Mifflin County ends their 2025 campaign with a 6-5 record.

Next week DuBois will meet up with undefeated Hollidaysburg again for the subregional title.  The Golden Tigers beat up DuBois 49-0 one week ago.
