Eastern Pennsylvania Conference All-Star Team Announced

Nazareth’s Sonny Sasso and Freedom’s Owen Johnson Players of the Year.

There was little doubt of just how valuable quarterback-safety Sonny Sasso was to this years Nazareth Blue Eagles football team. Sasso had major hand surgery and missed the District XI quarter-final playoff game with Parkland Friday night. A game which his team lost and officially ended his brilliant football career. As the coaches voted him the offensive player of the year and also selected as first-team safety.

Owen Johnson, of Freedom was selected as defensive player of the year for the South Division. Johnson is headed off to Harvard in the fall.

Sasso, is headed of to Virginia Tech on a wrestling scholarship. He ended his career with 1,972 yards passing on 132 of 197 passes and 21 touchdowns and two interceptions. He also picked up 266 yards on the ground on 64 attempts and added 74 tackles on the defensive side of the ball.

Johnson, was also recognized on both sides of the ball as being named first-team outside linebacker. Johnson had three sack in the win Friday night over Hazleton.

Eight player from Emmaus made the team, the most from one school, with Dylan Darvelle and Mario Landino making both offensive and defensive teams. The Green Hornets are 10-1 on the season and have a date with Freedom Friday night for a spot in the 6A District Championship game.
