Easton v Erasmus Hall Week 3 by PAFootball Newsdotcom
Cole Ordway exploded through the offensive line for a 71-yard touchdown with 56 seconds left in the game to finally ice the Red Rovers’ victory over Erasmus Hall. Despite over 200 yards on 23 penalties racked up by the Dutchmen, the team from Brooklyn led most of the way before succumbing late.
Easton’s opening drive spanned over five minutes of the first quarter, but ended in a turnover on downs when Kurtis Crossman was brought down two yards short of the line to gain at the Dutchmen 10.
On their ensuing drive, an Ameir Morrow 12-yard gain and a defensive pass interference moved the Dutchmen out from the shadow of their goalposts. Quarterback Kendu Brown took off on a 29-yard run before taking it 19 yards to the end zone to put his team ahead 6-0 with 4:44 to go in the first.
Nasir Brown sacked Ordway on Easton’s next drive, forcing a quick three-and-out. Erasmus Hall made Easton pay quickly, as Brown fired an 82-yard touchdown pass to Morrow. However, it was here where it became apparent penalties were going to be an issue for the New York team all night long. The touchdown was called back on a hold. Two more holds and a personal foul would marr the drive, but Brown found Justus Murray Jr. over the middle behind the secondary for a 39-yard score. Despite the fouls, Erasmus was up 12-0 with 10:38 to go in the first half.
Easton needed a spark, but couldn’t find it. Just one play into their next drive, Ordway was picked off over the middle and the Dutchmen were back in business in plus territory. Fortunately for the Rovers, they forced a punt and got the ball back on their own 26 with 8:46 to play in the half.
This time, the Rovers put together a 13-play drive that covered 74 yards, culminating with a Zack Martenis 13-yard touchdown catch.
On the next Erasmus Hall drive, Brown was picked off by Tristen Dees, who went on to make a big mark of his own on the contest. Five plays later, Ordway was in the end zone and Easton took a 13-12 lead with :22 to play before halftime.
Mistakes in kick coverage led to a long return for the Dutchmen, and with 20 seconds left, Erasmus Hall managed the clock and got the perfect pass from Brown to Amani Cespedes to steal the halftime lead, 19-13.
The halftime statistics didn’t match the scoreboard–the Dutchmen had 15 penalties for 143 yards and Easton had run 23 plays in Hall territory to just eleven by Hall in plus territory.
In search of another big play, Easton opened the second half with an onside kick that was taken by the Dutchmen at their own 44. Easton was able to dodge a bullet, as a 4th-and-10 pass fell incomplete. But two plays later, Chris Martinez fumbled and the Dutchmen were on it.
Algee Macon bailed out the Rovers, coming around the left side and sacking Kendu Brown for a loss of nine. Following a punt, Ordway took the first play from scrimmage 57 yards to pay dirt, putting Easton back in front 20-19 with 7:17 to play in the third quarter.
Undeterred, Brown fired right back, hooking up with Jaire Lewis for 57 yards to flip the field. He then hit Victor Onukaogu from eight yards out to retake the lead 25-20 with 3:09 left in the third.
Easton got a big connection from Ordway to Crossman on a 4th and 3 call to extend their ensuing drive, leading to an 18-yard Ordway touchdown explosion through the middle of the line. With 11:05 to play, Easton led 27-25 as the teams continued to battle back and forth.
Tristen Dees made another heroic play on special teams. After forcing a Dutchmen punt, he blocked the kick and Easton took over on the Dutchmen 49. Four plays later, he trucked his way to the end zone for a 35-yard score, giving Easton their first multiple score lead of the game at 34-25 with 6:47 to play. Unfortunately, Dees suffered an injury on this play and later was seen on crutches.
A holding penalty on the ensuing kickoff backed up Erasmus Hall to their own 9 yard line. Trevon Tyler read the first play of the drive and picked off Brown, setting up Easton on the Dutchmen 25. On 4th-and-3, Easton opted for a 37-yard field goal. The kick was good to extend the lead to 37-25.
But Erasmus Hall had one more trick up their sleeve, as Justus Murray took the kickoff to the house. With 3:09 to play, the lead was trimmed to 37-32 and the Dutchmen had all three timeouts to spare. With a stop, they could regain the lead.
Cole Ordway ended that chance. On 3rd & 17, he pounded over the left side of the line, slamming the door and moving the lead to what would be the final score of 44-32 with :56 to play.
On the night, Kendu Brown threw for 274 yards and three scores, but the Easton defense was particularly impressive holding the Dutchmen to just 100 yards on the ground.
Meanwhile, Easton got the spectacular effort from Ordway, who ran for four scores and passed for another. He ran 18 times for 200 yards and passed for 46. Chris Martinez was also a workhorse, carrying 34 times for over 100 yards.
Easton’s tough schedule continues next week when they travel to BASD Stadium to take on Bethlehem Catholic.
