Easton Red Rovers (10-0) and Emmaus Hornets (4-6) football teams squared off Friday night at Cottingham Stadium in Easton PA for the opening round of the District XI 6A playoffs. The Hornets came in trying to play spoiler again as they did last year in the District XI 6A semi-finals. This time there was even more at stake as Easton was also going for win #900 all-time.
The Rovers took their opening drive and scored on a Cole Ordway 3 yard Touchdown. Both defenses held strong through 1st quarter and almost the entire 2nd quarter. Easton’s Andrew Biddle Muffed a punt which was recovered by Emmaus Jamaad Sanders. The Easton defense held strong and forced a turnover on downs on a 4th and 13. The next score came with 24 seconds left on the clock before halftime. Ordway threw a 19 yard pass to Sean McPeek who made a leaping catch over his defender to make it 14-0 at the half.
Easton did as the did in the first quarter but this time took 6:58 seconds off the clock and ending their opening drive of the 2nd half with Long run by Trevon Tyler to make it 21-0. Both teams traded turnovers as Ordway fumbled and it was recovered by Jerek Cooper. Emmaus drove the ball before Biddle paid his debts and intercepted Cooper.
The 4th Quarter was scoreless again until late. Jerek Cooper scrambled for 44 yards into the endzone with 48 seconds remaining, making the score 21-7. on the kickoff Emmaus went for the onside kick and recovered it. A big pass over the middle to Sanders had the Hornets moving the ball quickly. On the next play McPeek said that was enough and took interception to house to make it 28-7 with 14 seconds remaining. Easton’s Sean Kilpatrick allowed the clock to run out by sacking Cooper to end the game.
