Easton-

In what turned out to be quite the soggy affair, this battle between two of the Lehigh Valley’s most storied programs saw the Red Rover offense run around and through the Liberty defense en route to a 38-20 victory in the District XI 6A semi-final.

Starting off the game, both defenses kept the opposing offense in check for the entirety of the first quarter, with the Rovers finally getting points on the board via a 31 yard field goal off the foot of Noah Borluca on the first play of the 2nd quarter.

The Easton defense forced a quick 3 and out for the Hurricane offense and Rover’s Trevon Tyler was quick to extend Easton’s lead as he took the offense’s first play 49 yards to the house just as the rain really started to come down. With 10:37 remaining in the half, it was Easton 10, Liberty 0.  Looking to respond, Gabe Green looked to have returned the ensuing kick-off for a touchdown, but a hold was called on the play and brought the ball back deep in to their own territory.  The Rover defense forced a punt and kept Liberty off the board once again.  The following 4 play Easton drive was capped off by a 15 yard scamper up the middle of the Liberty defense by Chris Martinez to extend the Rover lead to 17 with 5:44 left in the half.

Liberty took to the air on their next drive and quarterback Antonio Fontanez picked apart the Rover defense and capped off the scoring drive with a 43 yard strike to Zyaire Davis to get Liberty on the board. With just over 4 minutes remaining in the first have, it was Easton 17, Liberty 7.

In to the second half, Liberty took their opening drive right down the field once again on the arm of Fontanez as he connected with Zyaire Davis multiple times on the drive, culminating with a fantastic one handed grab for a 24 yard touchdown.  Liberty was back in the game, 17-13 after the extra point was no good.

The momentum gained by Liberty on the drive was quickly extinguished as Easton’s Trevon Tyler returned the ensuing kick-off all the way for a touchdown.

Looking to keep up with the Easton scores, Fontanez took to the air once again, after finding more success, he was eventually picked off by Easton’s Andrew Biddle.

This momentum shift was quickly forgotten as on the first play of the Easton drive, Martinez fumbled the ball right back to Liberty.  This drive saw the Easton defense bend but not beak Fontanez led the Hurricane offense all the way down to the Easton 13 yard line.  The Rover defense stood up Gabe Green on 4th and 1 to get the ball back for the Easton offense. The Rovers were unable to get much of anything going on this drive and punted the ball back to Liberty.  The Hurricanes, also unable to get their offense rolling punted the ball back to Easton and on the first play of the 4th quarter, Ordway called his own number and took it himself right up the middle of the Liberty defense for a 40 yard score.  With just under 12 minutes left in the game, it was Easton 31, Liberty 13.

Liberty had their next drive ended early once again by an interception at the hands of Easton’s Andrew Biddle who managed to hold on to the ball as he was inadvertently rocked by one of his fellow Easton defenders.

Back on the field, Ordway kept it on the ground for a huge gain down in to the Liberty red-zone where after a facemask penalty got the ball to the Hurricane 3 yard-line, Ordway found room around the left side and took it in to the end-zone himself.  With 9 minutes remaining in the contest, it was Easton 38, Liberty 13.

Refusing to go quitely,  Fontanez and the Liberty offense took to the field and the quarterback capped off a successful drive by hitting Javion White over the middle of the field for an 11 yard touchdown to make the score Easton 38, Liberty 20 with  7:50 remaining in the game.

The ensuing kick-off was then fumbled by Easton and Liberty pounced on the loose ball.  The Hurricanes drove down to the Easton 27 where they were stopped on 4th down and the ball went back to the Easton offense.  The Rovers the bled out the rest of the clock with multiple first down pickups to seal the game and lock in their matchup next week in the District 11 6A Final vs Parkland.

After the game I was able to get a few words with the Red Rover offensive line ( Kurtis Crossman, Algee Macon, Anthony Diaz, Elijah Grovesnor, and Matt Kirchner) about opening up lanes for the Easton ground attack, the Victory, and some Thanksgiving favorites.

With the loss, Liberty’s season comes to a close with a final record of 8-4.  With the victory, Easton (12-0) moves on to the District XI 6A Championship to face Parkland(12-0) who defeated Nazareth(8-4) 35-14 in the other semi-final matchup in District XI 6A play.
