Easton v Becahi by PAFootball Newsdotcom

The battle of unbeatens at BASD Stadium went to the road team, as Easton turned Bethlehem Catholic’s home into their own, quickly wearing down the Golden Hawks.

No single play was the huge turning point in the game, but the Red Rovers’ first two drives each chewed up over four minutes of the first quarter. Easton ran the no-huddle all night long, which took a significant conditioning toll on Becahi.

Easton’s opening drive covered 75 yards in ten plays, eating up the first 4:10 of the game. Runs of 13 and 18 yards from Chris Martinez were instrumental in setting the early temp and tone of the game. Cole Ordway carried it the final seven yards for the opening score.

Cayden Vassa also started strong. Bethlehem Catholic’s opening drive lasted over seven minutes and featured a 50-yard pass to his brother Carter Vassa. However, the drive ended with a 24-yard field goal, as a false start pushed the Hawks back from the five to the ten. This was the first of five pre-snap penalties on the night against Bethlehem Catholic, some of which were caused by the Easton band and crowd noise.

Easton’s second drive also went ten plays and was capped by an Ordway 2-yard touchdown, increasing the Rovers lead to 14-3 with 8:15 to play in the first half. Along the way, Ordway hit Mason Stout and Andrew Biddle for gains of 13 each.

The Golden Hawks’ next two drives netted -7 yards, while Ordway was picked off by Carter Vassa on a deep throw. Unfortunately for Bethlehem Catholic, they’d end up unting from near their own end zone, allowing Easton to take over in plus territory at the 46. Just four plays later, Sean McPeek made a spectacular 25-yard catch in the end zone with a man on him to increase the lead to 21-9. With 3:20 to go in the half, Easton led 21-3.

Bethlehem Catholic responded, taking advantage of a pass interference call against Easton. Instead of 3rd & 7, Beca got a first down on the Easton 42. Cayden Vassa took off to the house on the next play, cutting the deficit to 21-9 near halftime. Logan Peacock sacked Ordway to end the half, giving Bethlehem Catholic some momentum.

The Hawks had a chance to cut further into the deficit, receiving the ball to open the third quarter. A block in the pack pinned them back on their own nine, but Vassa gained 23 on a run and then found Axel Burkhart for 33 yards. The drive stalled, though, when Kurtis Crossman came up with a big sack that led to a fourth down incompletion.

Chris Martin, who finished the night with a 200 yard rushing effort, capped the ensuing Easton drive from four yards out to increase the lead to 28-9 with 2:49 left in the third.

Bethlehem’s next drive netted six yards. A fourth down incompletion allowed Easton to again take over in plus territory and Ordway found Andrew Biddle for a 9-yard touchdown to salt the game away at 35-9 with 11:52 to go.

Easton’s line play and up-tempo attack were the key ingredients all night long. The Red Rovers amassed 280 rushing yards, while holding the Golden Hawks to 100. Cayden Vassa and Axel Burkart combined to complete 10 of 26 passes for 128 yards.

Easton returns home next Friday night to take on Emmaus. Bethlehem Catholic will play in the Holy War next Saturday at J Birney Crum.
