Evan Austin Helps Oakdale Beat Linganore Again, This Time for All the Marbles

These two rivals are separated by 7 miles of real estate.  These two rivals battled it out all game as Oakdale hung on at the end to win the Maryland 3A state championship 42-35 in the fog at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium Saturday night.  If you like offense, this was the game.  A good educated guess would say these two teams brought the largest and loudest fan bases of the entire six-game weekend.  It was just a wonderful atmosphere to watch a high school football game.  And the dense fog just added to the aura.

Yes, it was very foggy.

Austin, the Oakdale Bear quarterback, who has committed to UNC Charlotte as a wide receiver, had himself a day.  He completed 17 of 21 passes for 272 yards and 4 touchdowns.  But that’s not all.  He ran the pigskin for another 179 yards on 22 totes and scored a TD.  Thus, the math says he accounted for 451 yards and all 5 of his team’s TDs.  The guy who snared 15 of Austin’s 17 completed passes was Hunter Thompson.  The first 15 targets were all caught by Thompson including 4 touchdown receptions.  Some of those snares were on par with Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison.  All in all, Thompson had 263 receiving yards.

#2 far right is Evan Austin about to scramble for a chunk of yardage. He is led by #30 Cole Swinimer.

Oakdale, at one point led 17-0 early in the second quarter.  They led 20-7 at halftime thanks to a last second field goal by Jackson Peterson.  The second half saw the teams trade scores, but the Linganore Lancers never could get even.  Three times they pulled within one score but never could get even.  After the Lancers made it 42-35, they almost recovered the onside kick when it was picked up by an Oakdale Bear who tried to advance it but fumbled it.  Another Oakdale Bear pounced on it just in time.

Christian Petruzzello threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns for Linganore.  Receiver MJ Rawlett caught 5 passes for 84 yards and a TD.  The Bears outgained the Lancers in total yardage 500 to 270.  They also scored every time they had the ball until the last two times.  It was Oakdale’s second football championship in their 14-year history since opening in 2010.  The Bears also won in 2018.  Oakdale finished undefeated at 14-0, while Linganore finished 12-2 with both losses coming to Oakdale by 7 points.  The Bears won 21-14 over the Lancers back in September.
