A battle of the undefeated in a major ICC South matchup. Berlin Brothersvalley hosts Everett to open up conference play. Both have done very well against teams from the ICC North and are now set up for a big matchup in week three.

Berlin in particular has done great, blowing out Claysburg 35-7 week one and took care of Mount Union last week 28-14. With a very young team, they have really stepped up early, setting up what could be another excellent team for the Mountaineers. Their play thus far has landed them into the honorable mention spot in the 2A rankings. A big win here could get them into the top 10. They are earning it thus far and the expectations were set with some skepticism on this team, but they are proving that they are a good team.

“I think we’ve had two really solid games out of our offensive and defensive lines the last two weeks,” Berlin Head Coach Dante Paul explained on what his team has proved to him so far. “With a lot of question marks heading into the season those guys have answered the call so far, and hopefully they continue to do so.”

Specifically looking into that defensive line, they have completely shut down two dynamic runners so far in Claysburg’s Mason Campagna and Mount Union’s Nasir Collins. Everett has a star rusher of their own in Jakobe Harman, who may be the best out of these three. Everett knows that it will be tough to work around this strong Berlin defense and they need Harman to end this trend to have success.

“Berlin is a very good team,” Everett Head Coach Brian Koontz stated. “They’re big they’re strong and physical typical Berlin team. We’re really gonna have to block and tackle very well for us to be successful. We have to run the ball and stay ahead of the sticks, not put ourselves in long yardage situations.”

Harman is coming off a big week against a tough Moshannon Valley team. He scored four touchdowns while rushing for 280 yards on 35 carries. The team goes where Harman takes them and if they want to have a chance this week, they need Harman to run all over Berlins defense.

“Jakobe is a great athlete and a very physical runner,” Coach Paul said about Everetts star. “He also has the explosiveness to take any play the distance. Anytime you play an athlete like him everyone on defense has to execute their assignments, or he will make you pay.”

Berlin has two physical runners of their own too in Carter Durst and Seth Kimmel. They have combined for 314 total yards so far and they run behind a strong offensive line. They have not really found consistent passing just yet, just like Everett, so running the ball well will dictate their success as well.

“The two of them compliment each other very nicely,” Coach Paul replied. “We want to be a physical football team and the way they run fits that mold. The two of them are very unselfish. If we want to continue having success running the football will be of vital importance.”

The two of them are obviously very talented and will be exactly what the Warriors are working towards stopping. They know that they need to everything right to prevent them because they are very great rushers.

“If we line upright and try to get them to run side to side instead of right at us,” Coach Koontz commented on what needs to go right to stop their run game. “I mean they’re gonna get their yards. We just have to make them earn it.”

It will be a very interesting game in Berlin on Friday night. This game should impact the state rankings at 2A and the overall picture in the ICC south. Both teams could find each other again later in the year in the D5 2A playoffs, so this game will say a lot moving forward.
