Farrell Wins Fourth Straight D10 Title

Hermitage – Farrell earns fourth straight District 10 AA title.

For the Farrell Steelers, winning District 10 championships has become a habit. From 2015 to 2019, they won five straight District 10 A titles.

On Saturday night in Hermitage, they won their fourth consecutive District 10 AA title, knocking off Sharpsville 28-18 at Hickory High School.

“That was our goal all year,” said Farrell head coach Anthony Pegues. “We wanted to win the region and the District 10 title. Ugly game tonight. We had 20 penalties, and that’s where my head is right now. We can’t have that going against this Central Clarion team. If we do that, we’ll be heading home next week. We need to play better; it looked ugly, honestly. We have a lot to fix this week, and we’ll be better.”

Though it certainly wasn’t the prettiest win. But winning ugly is a heckuva lot better than losing ugly.

Farrell was penalized 20 times for 177 yards, per Chris Rossetti of d9and10sports.com. This was coming one week after the Steelers committed 15 penalties during a 44-7 win over Seneca.

“We did get the W and the championship,” said Pegues. “But it is better to have an ugly win than an ugly loss. We’re still playing for another week. We have time to fix it and play a lot better.”

The game saw a wild 215 penalty yards in the first half. Sharpsville wasn’t innocent, either. Nine flags were thrown on them for 81 yards, all in the first half.

Things didn’t start well on the opening kickoff as Sharpsville recovered the ball at the Steelers’ 40-yard line. The Blue Devils lost 16 yards on the ensuing drive, allowing Farrell to crack the scoreboard first.

Zameere Thomas caught a 32-yard touchdown from Aaron Pegues to open the scoring midway through the opening quarter.

“We knew if we could get up on them quick and early, we could get them to do some things that they’re not used to doing,” said Pegues. “But they stuck to their game plan. I was surprised at the end when they ran the clock out a little bit. But it is what it is, and I knew Sharpsville would come to play.”

Sharpsville tied the game when they drove 45 yards in seven plays, with freshman Geno Currie scoring on a 4-yard run late in the first quarter.

Farrell took the lead for good when Dey’mar Cain intercepted Aidan Cadman and returned the ball 38 yards with a pair of penalties on the Blue Devils put the ball at the 3-yard line, where Juelz Johnson scored his first of three touchdowns on the next play.

On their succeeding drive, the Blue Devils added a 28-yard field by Rylan Piccirilli before Johnson capped a 48-yard drive with a 15-yard run with 2:04 to play in the half.

The Steelers had an opportunity to extend their lead by intermission when Aaron Pegues ran 45 yards on 4th-and-3 to the 3-yard line. But Farrell couldn’t overcome some penalties and the clock.

After taking the second-half kickoff, Sharpsville pulled to within 21-18 when Currie scored on a 1-yard run. Aidan Cadman connected with Aidan Puskar for a 57-yard pass to the Steelers’ 1-yard line to set up the touchdown.

Geno Currie rushed for a game-high 117 yards on 24 carries for Sharpsville, but 1,000-yard rusher Jaiden White was limited to negative nine yards on nine carries.

Farrell would get their two-score lead back on the resulting drive when Johnson capped a 7-play 61-yard drive with a 27-yard run.

Juelz Johnson rushed for a game-high 189 yards on 23 carries, scoring three touchdowns. Aaron Pegues added 75 yards on seven carries, while Jason Marshall chipped in with 35 yards rushing.

“I just came out knowing what we had to do,” Johnson said. “Our goal was to win this, and now it’s on to the next step. It’s a great feeling; every year I’ve been up here, we’ve won it.”

Sharpsville had an opportunity to pull within three points again late in the third quarter when Currie ran 25 yards to the 1-yard line. On the following play, a bad snap resulted in Farrell recovering the ball in the end zone for a touchback.

“That was big because if they score there, then you’re talking about a one-score game,” said Pegues. “To get the stop there and move the ball was very big. Like I said, if they get in, it’s a different ball game.”

Farrell will now play District 9 champion Central Clarion. The Wildcats spot an 11-0 record and are ranked second in Class AA.
