Charleston – A night to remember.
Frankfort won their first-ever state football championship Friday night at Laidley Field in Charleston, 49-14, over Roane County.
A highly anticipated contest between two 13-0 teams turned into a one-sided rout, as the boys from Mineral County left no doubt about who was the top dog in AA.
Perhaps winning with 49 points to break a 49-year drought is a coincidence, but Frankfort becomes the first county school to win a state title since 1975, when Ridgeley won it all. Frankfort was created the following school year as Ridgeley and Fort Ashby combined.
“This is awesome,” said Frankfort head coach Kevin Whiteman. “This is all I’ve ever wanted, to finally get the chance to do it. The first time we went it was very disappointing because we got hammered. To pull it off tonight and win for the Frankfort community, I’m so happy. Look at all the people that came out here tonight. In 49 years, they finally have a championship.”
Friday marked the first time Frankfort had advanced to the state final in a decade. In 2014, they fell 43-7 in Bridgeport.
But that wouldn’t happen again as their dominant rushing attack led the way, gaining 325 yards of their 412 offensive yards on only 25 snaps. The tailbacks of Julian Pattison and Carder Shanholtz combined for 299 yards on only 13 carries. That’s a mind-boggling 23 yards per carry.
However, the Raiders took the opening kickoff and drove from their 28-yard line to the Falcons 15. On 4th-and-5, Jacob Greathouse’s pass to Shay Harper came up a yard short of the sticks.
“We came out and were very physical,” said Whiteman. “I was a little worried on that opening drive, but after that we settled in and played a great game. I’m so proud of our kids.”
Perhaps that was the game-changing play, as Carder Shanholtz ran 89 yards for a touchdown on the next snap.

Things went from bad to worse for Roane County, which lost consecutive fumbles to put them in a 21-0 hole after a quarter.
Jeff McCullough recovered a Greathouse fumble, and again, on the ensuing snap, Julian Pattison scored his first of five touchdowns on a 41-yard run. Frankfort scored two touchdowns before Roane County made a single tackle.
“When you get the momentum, that’s a hard thing to stop,” Whiteman. “Our kids fed off of that. At halftime I kept telling them it’s not over and we need to keep being physical. I knew we needed to keep this thing rolling, and they did a great job.”
Another fumble, this one recovered by Lane Lease at the Raiders 34-yard line, led to Pattison’s 25-yard run on a 4th-and-1.
Roane County then went on a 15-play drive that nearly ate up the entire clock, only to have Braydn Tyler intercept Greathouse at the goal line on 4th-and-7 with 2:36 on the first half clock.
The Falcons then needed only six plays to put it in the end zone again as Pattison scored on a 1-yard run with 22 seconds left in the half. Uriah Cutter’s 35-yard pass to McCullough set up the score.
Frankfort quickly put the mercy clock into effect in the third quarter as Pattison ripped off another 41-yard touchdown run to cap a 3-play 56-yard drive.
After turning the Raiders over on downs at their 43-yard line, Jett McCullough caught a 43-yard pass from Uriah Cutter that invoked the mercy clock at 42-0.
Roane County got on the scoreboard on their following drive as Shay Harper scored on a 25-yard run late in the third quarter.

For a little more insurance, Pattison scored on a 51-yard run on the initial snap of the fourth quarter for his fifth touchdown of the night.
“This is our first in school history,” said Pattison. “So we knew we had to execute coming in, and that’s what we did. It’s a great feeling for everyone in our community that supports us. I had a good feeling all week. I knew no one would stop us if we started gaining momentum.”
He rushed for a game-high 178 yards on nine carries. Carder Shanholtz added 121 yards on four carries.
The Raiders closed the scoring when Lane Watson added a 33-yard run against the Falcon reserves. Watson led Roane County with 134 yards on 19 carries.
