BETHLEHEM- After spotting the Red Rovers of Easton ten points, the Freedom Patriots roared back on the arm of junior quarterback Brian Taylor’s three touchdown passes to go on to defeat the Rovers 21-10 before a moderate crowd at BASD Stadium Saturday night.

Easton came into the contest state-ranked by several media outlets, got a field goal from Jaxon Heinemeyer in the opening quarter, then running back Nahjee Adams scored on a three yard dive with 11:11 left in the first half. Adams ran for 124 yards on 24 touches but was contained from popping the big play by a stout Freedom defensive effort.

Taylor, who is in his first year on the varsity squad, started out the game cold going one for his first seven passes, stayed in the moment and the game started coming to him as his receivers found some holes in the Easton secondary. His first score came with just twenty seconds before halftime as he threw a perfect fade route to Owen Johnson-McCormick covering 23 yards out-leaping the Rover defender at the goal line to cut the lead to 10-7 at the break.

In the second half, Taylor, along with a swarming Freedom defense, kept the pressure on Easton to the exent they could not put any more points on the board the rest of the night.

A perfectly thrown 47 yard spiral found receiver AJ Fletcher streaking down the sideline gave Freedom it’s first lead at 14-10 with 10:30 left in the third quarter. Taylor finished the night 7-for-17 passing and 134 yards.

Easton had several opportunities to get points on the scoreboard in the final period, but a missed field goal from about 30 yards out struck the upright and bounced back in the end zone. Rovers’ quarterback Cole Transue, who was harassed all night, was sacked on a fourth down play ended another drive and in the waning moments of the contest a last-ditch pass was intercepted by defensive back John Quin Hoke with a minute left.

Freedom and Taylor put the game out of reach with a 14 yards pass again to Fletcher, who made a diving catch in the end zone to make it 21-10.

“It was a good night for our defense,” Freedom coach Jason Roeder stated. “Wev ran the bell well and we got after it tackling-wise, against a back like Adams, youknow he will get his yards, you just don’t want him taking over the game.” He concluded.

The road doesn’t get any easier for either team next week as Freedom (3-0) will face another undefeated team in Nazareth at BASD Stadium Friday night, the Blue Eagles defeated Northampton 27-17, while Easton (2-1) will compete against Bethlehem Catholic(2-1) also at BASD Stadium Saturday afternoon, the Hawks took care of Liberty by a count of 41-17.
