After posting shutout wins in their most recent playoff games, the Neumann-Goretti Saints are set to take on the Trinity Shamrocks in the State Playoffs this Friday Night at 7 PM at Exeter Township High School. The Saints enter this matchup on a 3-game winning streak and defeated the John Bartram Braves by a final score of 36-0 two weeks ago and are coming off a playoff bye week. Meanwhile, the Shamrocks are coming into this contest on a 4-game winning streak after beating the Berks Catholic Saints last week with the final score being 17-0. With both teams looking to continue their recent stretches of dominant wins, this matchup figures to be a hard fought game that may come down to the wire.
Neumann-Goretti’s success is powered by their 2-headed monster rushing attack with Jr. A’mar Woodson, who had 597 yards and 10 TDs on the season, and So. Makhi Mitchell, who had 646 yards and 7 TDs this season. The team has also faced adversity at the QB position, losing their starter, So. Shane Salley during the first game of the season, and eventually turning to Fr. QB, Marquis Coleman, who has 728 passing yards and 3 TDs on the year. Their top receiving threat is Sr. TE, Carter Bashir, who has been a staple in their offense the past few years, and led the team in receiving last year as a junior with 25 receptions and 351 yards. As the Saints continue to get Coleman experience under center, they will lean heavily on the rushing attack and Bashir to carry the load.
Trinity’s success is powered by their Sr. QB, Mason Boyer, who has 159 completions for 1,910 yards and a 23-7 TD-Int ratio on the season. They also possess a strong rushing attack behind their workhorse RB, So. Brandon Harris, who has 156 attempts for 1,041 yards and 9 TDs on the season. Their receiving attack is lead by the 2-headed monster of Sr. Maddox Jarzynski, who has 67 receptions for 990 yards and 17 TDs this season, as well as Sr. Marcus Yeager, who has 49 receptions for 533 yards and 4 TDs on the year. Trinity’s offense possesses both balance and experience, as many of their weapons are seniors, including their QB and WR core. They will continue to lean on this experience as they look to make a deep playoff run.
Both teams enter this game riding momentum and dominant shutout victories, but I give Trinity the advantage due to the experience factor at QB, with Sr. Mason Boyer having almost 2,000 yards and 23 TDs on the season, while leading an explosive offense. While Neumann-Goretti’s strong rushing duo of A’mar Woodson and Makhi Mitchell should keep them involved, it will be on the shoulders of Fr. QB, Marquis Coleman to keep pace with an experienced and balanced Trinity offense, which doesn’t bode well for a QB with limited experience.
I think Trinity defeats Neumann-Goretti by a final score of 30-23
