Edinboro– General McLane put up 469 yards of offense and cruised past Corry 41-15 Thursday night at Linden Field in Edinboro.

You wouldn’t know that signal caller Matt Caro was making his first varsity start – the sophomore threw for 260 yards and four touchdowns on 17-of-28 passing.

“We’re very pleased with the win,” said General McLane head coach Marshall McCormick. “We had a sophomore quarterback come in, make his first start, and he really impressed us tonight. After a tough loss to North East last week, this one feels good for sure.”

Caro got plenty of help from wide receiver Jacob Zietz, who had a monster game for the Lancers, catching nine balls for 204 yards and three touchdowns.

Senior tailback Magnus Llyod started scoring on a 13-yard run late in the first quarter, capping a 73-yard drive. A 45-yard pass from Caro to Zietz was the drive’s big play.

Early in the second stanza, Caro connected with Zietz on a 33-yard touchdown pass on a 4th-and-10. Llyod’s 65-yard gain set up the touchdown.

Magnus Llyod also had a big game for General McLane, rushing for a game-high 144 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, including 122 in the first half.

Corry got on the scoreboard at the quarter’s midway point when Rylan Smith caught a 34-yard pass from Nolan Carey, succeeding a short punt.

Nolan Carey led the Beavers, completing 17-of-35 passes for 185 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

The Beavers then had a golden opportunity to tie the game by halftime after stopping the Lancers on fourth down at their 47-yard line.

However, despite moving the ball into the red zone, Carey was intercepted by Cohen Beachly at the 5-yard line and returned to the 28.

“We shot ourselves in the foot all game long,” said Corry head coach Jeff Goodwill. “We were looking to fix a few things from the last couple of weeks, but we didn’t. I thought we competed for a while. We didn’t respond well to that change for possession and quick score before the half.”

General McLane beat the clock as Zietz and Caro connected on a 17-yard touchdown with 18 seconds remaining in the half following a 6-play 72-yard drive.

“We went for it on fourth down earlier that gave them the good field position,” McCormick said. “We were down our kicker for the first half, so we tried some different things. That turnover and drive down the field was huge. Jacob has a twin brother who was a starting quarterback. They’ve been working all summer, but Matt has been there too, and they have great chemistry together. It was a nice change of pace to get Matt in there and be able to throw it a little more.”

Picking up right where they left off at the end of the first half when Ian Salisbury scored from 17 yards out, 1:07 into the third frame. Salisbury rushed for 47 yards on six carries.

The Lancers kept rolling when Zietz and Caro connected for the third time from 25 yards, capping off an 8-play 8-84 drive with 6:42 to play in the third quarter.

Matt Caro would toss his final touchdown of the night to begin the fourth quarter on a 10-yard pass to Justin Burgos.

The Beavers would close the scoring as both schools had their junior varsity teams in the game. Corry drove 85 yards in 11 plays and scored on Lamech Albers’ 2-yard run with 29 seconds to play. Backup quarterback Lucas Baker went 4-for-4 on the drive for 61 yards.

Corry, which now sports a 1-3 record, will look to get back on the winning track next Friday night when they host Fairview.

“You always have to look for the positives, said Goodwill. “We were able to move the ball at times, and I’m proud of my kids for playing hard until the end. We have some things we can build on moving forward.”

General McLane improves to 3-2 on the season and travels to Harbor Creek next Friday night.

“We wanted to keep things going in the right direction,” concluded McCormick. “It’s important to keep the confidence going with the kids. We know Harbor Creek will come out and play hard, so we must prepare for a tough football game.”
