The George Washington Eagles traveled across the city Friday afternoon in search of a win that creating an 3 way tie in the independence division for 3rd place with West Philly and Lincoln. A win and they’re assured at worst the final playoff spot for the division, a loss and their fate would be at the hands of Lincoln upsetting Imhotep Saturday afternoon. Well after a physical first half the Eagles trailed west Philly 16-12. The Eagles in the 3rd period struggled to find consistency on offense but early in the 4th quarter a 50 yard catch and a run from Sr QB Marcel Sanders hooked up with stud Jr. Jakai Stevenson to put GW up 18-16 with 5:41 left in the 4th quarter. Not to be outdone West Philly immediately responded with a couple of big plays led by a 56 yard pass from Sr QB Ahmeir Green to Jr Athlete Jahsir Newsome. Newsome ran in a few plays later to give West the lead once again 22-18 with 3:53 left in the game. The Eagles took the ball from their own 35 yard line and methodically drove down the field behind the strong running of Jr Kierre Stewart and So Aa’shir McColugh to retake the lead at 24-22 with just under a minute remaining in the game. West had life when Ahmeir hooked up with Jr A’Kar Archer on a 36 yard pass to get into the red zone but the final play with 2 seconds on the clock was rushed for a loss of 6 yards and a GW win.
West now awaits Saturday results with Imhotep to see if they will earn the 4th seed in the playoffs or instead be playing in the PIT. GW played valiantly despite missing 7 starters due to injury. Coach Austin Brasche stated “this was a classic game something I’ve never been apart of with the back and forth at the end of the game. I’m happy for our kids because it’s been a long season and they’re learning how to compete and win. Being down 7 starters our kids just battled and it was next man up at so many positions. Hopefully we get a ton kids cleared by the doctors next week and can put together a title run”.
