Sharpsville – Deja Vu?

A season ago, Greenville fell to Wilmington in the opener; also a season ago, they went on to win 11-straight games, including a pair of postseason contests.

The 2025 version of the Trojans looks more than capable of doing the same thing after a 46-13 thrashing of Sharpsville Saturday night at James McCracken Field.

“Yeah, I thought it was a nice bounce-back win,” said Greenville head coach Mike Menold. “Kids played hard, got a little sloppy there, late, but they played hard. We accomplished many positive things. I think it was important, last week, after getting off to a strong start, Wilmington played very well. To get off to a strong start again tonight and then follow that up with a stop and a score and a stop, and the score was significant for us.”

Wasting little time, Greenville scored on its first four possessions and never looked back after opening up a 21-0 lead after a quarter.

Once again, it was the trio of Cael Thruber, Justin Schell, and Rudy Gentile that led the way, scoring the first six touchdowns of the game.

“Yeah, I mean, I think that those kids are super competitive. They love to play,” Menold said.  “They have opportunities. Oftentimes, they make them, and they did tonight.”

Cael Thurber accounted for all three first-quarter scores as he found the end zone on runs of 23 and 3 yards, while tossing a 34-yard touchdown to Justin Schell.

“It feels good,” said Thurber.  “Sharpsville was a good team, a well-coached team, and we knew we had to come out and make a statement today. It’s always essential to secure a strong lead. Get a good cushion.  You can then start maybe experimenting a little bit, so it was good to get that lead.”

Sharpsville was able to get in the end zone in the second quarter, primarily due to the legs of Geno Currie, as Will Vogan capped a 9-play 75-yard drive with a 7-yard run.

Right back at ya, Rudy Gentile capped a 7-play 65-yard drive with a 12-yard scamper after running through half the Blue Devils defense.

Greenville led 27-6 at intermission and held that lead entering the final 12 minutes.

Justin Schell then put the game out of reach as he made an outstanding leaping catch in the end zone early in the fourth quarter on a 29-yard grab from Thurber.

He then intercepted a Currie pass and returned it to the Sharpsville 6-yard line, where Gentile scored on the following play.

Schell caught five passes for 128 yards, while Thurber completed 10 of 14 passes for 179 yards and a pair of scores.

“We’ve been friends since I don’t know, first grade, best friends,” Thurber said of Schell. “We played JV together in Junior High. We have an unbelievable connection, and we’re good friends, so I think that helps.”

Rudy Gentile went over the century mark on the ground with 112 yards on 14 carries with two touchdowns.

Geno Currie then got his touchdown as he ran through the Trojans’ defense and broke loose for a 65-yard touchdown run. Although the game was out of reach, Currie still ran for a game-high 180 yards on 27 carries.

“He runs hard. He never stops turning his legs,” Menold said.  “We knew, obviously, all week, that you had to get. Stop him before he gets started because he’s tough to bring down when he gets running in the open field. However, we did work on defending him. I thought the kids did a great job.”

Speaking of the younger players, Kyle McGirr scored on a 41-yard run as he made his lone carry count to close the scoring for the evening.

Greenville will look to keep the momentum going when it hosts Cambridge Springs next Friday night at Stewart Field.

“We’re off to a good start,” concluded Menold.  “I think they responded well to the Wilmington loss, but, yeah, we have a lot of work to do.  Old school, Chuck Norris. There’s no such thing as staying the same. You’re getting better. You’re getting worse. However, they improved this week, so we’ll hopefully make the same progress by next Friday.”

The Blue Devils, meanwhile, will aim for their first win of the season when they make the short jaunt to Brookfield, Ohio.
