Grove City – The Grove City Eagles rebounded from a tough loss at Hickory last Friday with a 50-14 victory over Sharpsville Saturday afternoon at Forker Field.

The Eagles offense, which could only muster one offensive touchdown last week during a 29-15 loss to Hickory, scored on their first seven possessions and racked up 491 yards of offense.

“It’s always hard to lose, for the coaches, the players, and the community,” said Grove City head coach Sam Mowrey. “We wanted to focus on taking a lesson from last week and using that as a way to get better. The boys had the right attitude; they never pouted or blamed anyone and responded correctly. They played a great game today.”

Hunter Hohman led the Eagle’s offense, completing 12-of-17 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 105 yards on ten carries, accounting for six total touchdowns.

“Hunter will battle every play, not just for himself but also for his teammates,” Mowrey said. “That’s why his teammates will also battle for him. He’s one of the most tenacious competitors. You’d never know that by talking to him.”

The Eagles opened the scoring, driving 66 yards in nine plays capped off with Hohman’s 28-yard scoring run.

Grove City extended their lead to 13-0 after a quarter when Gavin Lutz caught a 25-yard touchdown reception from Hohman on fourth down following a 72-yard drive.

Sharpsville, which has now lost three consecutive games since starting 5-0, got on the board when quarterback Caullin Summers scored a 4-yard run 42 seconds into the second quarter, capping off a 12-play 78-yard drive.

Caullin Summers led the Blue Devils, completing 17-of-28 passes for 160 yards with an interception while adding 24 yards rushing and a touchdown.

“We’re about six seconds of effort from point a to point b,” said Mowrey. “We knew with Caullin back there it wasn’t going to be six seconds; it was going to be eight or ten seconds. Our relentless going after him and forcing him out of the pocket.”

Subsequently, the Eagles answered when Nathan Greer caught a 34-yard touchdown from Hohman following an 80-yard drive.

The Blue Devils did their best to try and keep the back-and-fourth going, but the ensuing Sharpsville drive stalled at the Eagle’s 11-yard line, with Summers getting sacked for a 2-yard loss on a 4th-and-7.

Grove City scored twice before halftime when Hohman threw a 58-yard touchdown to Clayton Martin and Dominic Garzarelli’s 1-yard touchdown run.

Both drives accounted for 87 and 64 yards, respectively, and Grove City rolled up 369 yards of offense in the first half while taking a 35-6 lead into the locker room.

“The boys did an outstanding job on offense today,” Mowrey said. “It starts up front with the offensive line. We were able to make plays and execute.”

Hunter Hohman would add his final two touchdowns of the afternoon, scoring on runs of three and 31 yards in the third quarter as the Eagles invoked the mercy clock with 10:28 to play in the third quarter.

Sharpsville closed the scoring when Jaiden White scored on a 3-yard run with 10:32 to play. White rushed for 35 yards on eight carries.

The Blue Devils will look to end their 3-game losing streak when they host Hickory next Saturday night.

Grove City will conclude the regular season next Friday night when they host Wilmington.
