Hazleton Area wins in convincing fashion over Valley West

The Hazleton Area Cougars have gone through a lot of adversity this season. They went on a six game losing streak after starting the season with a win. They went through injuries. The Cougars ended up snapping their six game losing streak with a 50-14 victory over Wyoming Valley West. “Despite all the adversity, we’ve been in one score game after one score game. The young guys are continuing to improve, come on and get better.” said Hazleton Area head coach Dennis Buchman. Cougars senior Zander Coleman on the win tonight. “It took us a while to get here. We went through alot of adversity the last six weeks. To come away with one, we knew it was senior night, they wanted to send us out on the right path and every single one of us dug in and gave 150 percent.”

Valley West received the opening kickoff however, the kickoff was muffed and recovered by Hazleton Area at the Valley West five yard line. On the first play, Austin Wilson found Zander Coleman who made a one handed catch and got into the end zone from five yards out for a 7-0 Cougars lead with 11:47 remaining in the first quarter. Both teams traded three and outs. Late in the first quarter, Ashton Karlick went 48 yards to the Spartans 4 yard line. On a fourth and goal, Wilson found Coleman for the second time in the quarter for  14-0 Hazleton Area lead with 3:12 left in the first quarter.

Valley West got the ball and moved the ball as the first quarter came to an end. However, the drive stalled and the Spartans were forced to punt. Hazleton Area got the ball at their own 31. The drive ended with Wilson going to Riley VanGlist for a 16 yard score and a 22-0 Cougar lead with 8:57 remaining in the second quarter.

After another Spartan three and out, Hazleton Area went on a five play, 79 yard drive ending with Karlick scoring from 11 yards out for a 29-0 lead with 4:13 remaining in the second quarter and that ended up being the score at halftime. On the first play of the third quarter, Karlick scored his second touchdown of the game. This one from 65 yards out for a 36-0 lead and the mercy rule went into effect. After a fumble recovery, Karlick scored from 22 yards out for his third score of the game and a 43-0 lead. Valley West got on the board as Lucas Zdancewicz found Maki Wells from nine yards out to make it 43-8 after the two point conversion. Hazleton Area got their final touchdown as Sam Miller scored from 68 yards out and a 50-8 lead wth 1:04 remaining in the third quarter. The final touchdown was from the Spartans as Zdancewicz found Wells from 33 yards out for the second time to make it 50-14 as that was the final as Hazleton Area snapped a six game losing streak.
