Hempfield Rises Late – Takes Thriller Over Gateway (Photo Gallery)

Hempfield rallied in the fourth quarter to secure a 42-38 win over Gateway in a high-scoring matchup Friday Night. Hempfield stormed out of the gates with a pick six as Jack Kopas jumped a route and took it 71 yards to give Hempfield the early lead. Gateway came roaring back with a statement run of 78 yards, capped off with a touchdown by Gateway’s Shawn Moorefield to tie the game at seven a piece. It didn’t take long for Moorefield to find the endzone again, this time from 30 yards out to give gateway a seven point lead. Gateway would then recover a surprise onside kick that would lead to a field goal, giving them a 17-7 lead with just a minute to go in the first half. QB Dominic Detruf did not need a full minute however, completing a 42 yard strike to Lucas Simmons to close out the first half only down by 3 points. The second half start was not what they had hoped for however, losing a fumble and having Gateway DL Roberson Louis-Jeune take it 50 yards for the scoop and score. Hempfield and Gateway would then enter a battle of back and forth scoring for the remainder of the fourth quarter until Hempfield broke the pattern when Detruf found Kopas for a touchdown on back to back drives to reclaim the lead, 35-31, for the first time since it was 7-0 early in the first. Gateway would answer right back as Moorefield found the endzone one last time to put Gateway up 38-35 with a shad over four minutes remaining in the game. Once again Detruf and company shook off the nerves and marched down the field, JM Landa punched in the game winner with 38 seconds left from 4 yards out, securing a hard fought and thrilling, comeback win for the Spartans of Hempfield.
