Highlands beats Freeport in overtime thriller

In a battle of Allegheny Seven conference foes it was Highlands spoiling Freeport’s homecoming and knocking off the previously unbeaten Yellow Jackets in a overtime thriller 28-27.
The game got off to a hot start, Highlands got the ball to start the game and wasted no time getting on the board. After a long run and penalty Highlands was at the Freeport 10 yard line. On the next play Tevin Owen-Cratsenberg scored on a 2 yard run making the score 7-o Highlands with 11:03 in the first quarter. “We saw some things we liked on film, came out and executed really well, on the first drive” said Coach Bonislawski.

Freeport started their first drive on their own 20 yard line. It was a long drive as Freeport marched down the field, the great majority of the plays were runs by Amos Glenn but Freeport ended up scoring on a 5 yard touchdown pass from Drew Ross to Chace Flynn. That tied the score at 7 with 6:50 in the first quarter.

Highlands started their second drive at their own 21 yard line. On the third play a big pass was completed and Highlands had the ball at the Freeport 29 yard line. A few plays after that Highlands retook the lead on a second touchdown run by Tevin Owen-Cratsenberg this one being 11 yards. That made the score 14-7 Highlands with 2:17 in the first quarter.
In the second quarter Freeport started a drive at their own 31 yard line and after 3 runs they were already into Highlands territory. They were inside the red zone and on fourth down they attempted a field goal which was no good and the score remained 14-7 Highlands.
Highlands started with the ball at their own 20 yard line and just like Freeport had a long drive going. After getting the ball down to the Freeport 13 yard line, Tevin Owen-Cratsenberg found the end zone for a third time on a 13 yard run which made the score 21-7 Highlands with 27 seconds left in the second quarter.
Owen-Cratsenberg was the player of the game for Highlands. He had 235 yards rushing on 32 carries. “Tevs is a sophomore, does really well, man I give him credit, he runs hard, defensively blocked that kick, he’s just a phenomenal athlete, the sky’s the limit for Tevin” said Coach Bonislawski.
In the third quarter for the most part both teams struggled offensively. Late in the third quarter Freeport started a drive at their own 27 yard line. On the first play Drew Ross found Amos Glenn for a 73 yard touchdown pass, making the score 21-14 Highlands with 2:45 in the third quarter.
Drew Ross and Amos Glenn were both key players for Freeport. Ross was 8 of 13 passing for 151 yards, and Glenn had 139 yards on 31 carries.
Midway through the fourth quarter Freeport started a drive at their own 32 yard line. After a couple of personal fouls they were into Highlands territory. After a penalty of their own, Drew Ross found Owen Neistein for a 40 yard touchdown pass which tied the game at 21 with 6:42 in the fourth quarter.

On the following drive Highlands had a big run all the way down to the Freeport 19 yard line but the play after the ball was fumbled and Freeport recovered.
Freeport had the ball on their own 13 yard line and after getting close to midfield they fumbled the ball and Highlands recovered.
Each team had one more possession but neither team moved the ball offensively and the game went to overtime tied at 21.
Highlands got the ball first. Freeport’s defense was looking strong but on third down Tevin Owen-Cratsenberg found the end zone giving Highlands a 28-21 lead

On Freeport’s possession, Amos Glenn scored on the first play. On the extra point attempt the kick was blocked by Tevin Owen-Cratsenberg which gave Highlands the 28-27 win. “So before the play, I was just saying to myself, I’m going to go block this, I ran full speed, saw the hole and just jumped, and the ball came in” said Owen-Cratsenberg. “We dug deep, and I give Freeport a lot of credit, I mean they battled, we knew it was gonna be a battle, we knew they weren’t going to quit, we came out ready to play” said Coach Bonislawski.
Next week Highlands travels to Burrell and Freeport hosts Hopewell.
