ROUNDTRIP – 327 MILES

Wednesday, November 27

For more than 500 Pennsylvania teams their seasons have come to an end, however for some, there’s still an opportunity for their players to shine one more time.  The Schuylkill County Football Coaches Association (SCFCA) All-Star Game took place at Schuylkill Haven High School last week and more than 60 District 11 Senior players represented their schools on the field some for their final time on a football field.

The teams are split between North and South squads based on school locations throughout Schuylkill County.  While players on these teams battled against each other all season this is a chance for many to unite as teammates for one game.

On this night, the South squad reigned supreme tallying a final score of 50-0 against their Northern foes.  Many of the players I’ve seen shine all season did the same once again in this game as well and had a fun time doing so as touchdown celebrations were encouraged.

Check out some of the tremendous plays and celebrations from the SCFCA All-Star Game…

One of the highlights of traveling the state to cover football games is seeing some of the impressive school campuses and athletic facilities in Pennsylvania.  This week, I had the pleasure of visiting Mifflin County High School near Lewistown for the 4A Semi-Final featuring Aliquippa of District 7 facing off against Twin Valley of District 3.

Mifflin County HS spared at no expense when building their new complex which features two state-of-the-art stadiums…yes TWO stadiums!  The main stadium hosts football games and includes a video scoreboard and a field house.  The secondary stadium features a full-length field with an eight-lane track.  The facilities are top-notch and will surely be hosting numerous district and state playoff games for years to come.  Kudos to Mifflin County for investing in your student-athletes!

Here’s a quick look at Mifflin County HS and their stunning new stadium and school…

On this night, Aliquippa and Twin Valley would have the benefit of playing their 4A State Semi-Final at the fine facilities of Mifflin County High School.  The District 3 Raiders from Twin Valley entered the contest with an unblemished record and faced one of the most storied programs in Pennsylvania history (and the county) in the Aliquippa Quips.

Twin Valley was up to the task on a blustery and cold night racing out to a 28-6 halftime lead.  Aliquippa would fight back in the game narrowing the score to 28-24 before Twin Valley held on at the end for the victory and a trip to the PA State Finals!

Here’s some highlight from the Twin Valley/Aliquippa 4A thriller…

Playoff football at Altoona’s Mansion Park has been a staple in Pennsylvania for decades.  The Central PA landmark is one of the perfectly-located stadiums across the Commonwealth to host post-season matchups and it’s been privy to some of the state’s most memorable games over the years.

Mansion Park would host two state semi-final games on this day the first pitting District 3 Bishop McDevitt against District 7 Peters Township in a 5A tussle.  Peters Township had shocked WPIAL foe Pine-Richland a week ago to win their district title and they had their sights set on doing the same against the Crusaders for a trip to the State Finals.

Perennial state stalwart Bishop McDevitt found themselves in a street fight vs. Peters Township and the two highly-talented teams battled to a tie at 28-28 until just one second remained on the clock in the fourth quarter.

Check out some of the highlights from Peters Township vs. Bishop McDevitt…

Game Two on the day featured another District 3 vs. District 7 matchup as undefeated Harrisburg faced off against Pittsburgh Central Catholic in a 6A State Semi-Final.  On paper, this game looked like a dandy but on the field PCC was more than up to the task en route to a 32-14 victory to punch their ticket to the State Finals!  PCC ran wild on the Cougars all night fueled by a 200+ rushing effort by Viking RB Chrys Black.

Here’s some highlights from PCC vs. Harrisburg…
