ROUNDTRIP – 316 MILES
Thursday, October 31
The first week of the PIAA Football Playoffs is always a crapshoot. Rarely are there competitive contests with #1 District seeds facing off against #8 or #16 seeds and often against teams with losing records. Picking games to attend this week usually consists of evaluating where an upset might occur or in some cases what games are closest to home that might be fairly competitive.
My Thursday contest checked both those boxes as 7-3 Blue Mountain hosted 4-6 Lehighton in an intriguing #2 vs. #7 District 11 4A matchup located just a few miles from my day job. There’s a large portion of high school football fans who would rather do away with teams with losing records in the playoffs and in most cases their grievances are qualified by 30 and 40 points victories by the higher seeds. On this night, however, the 4-6 Lehighton squad visited Blue Mountain and stole the show leaving with a thrilling 29-28 win and a berth in the second round of the District 11 4A playoffs.

One of my favorite stadiums in the state to watch a high school football game is in Downingtown where both D-West and D-East play their home games. At least once a season I try to get to a game there and this week Downingtown West hosting Coatesville looked like a competitive matchup to make the two hour trip.
The game was back and forth all night with the hometown Whippets (great name!) holding a slim 7-0 halftime advantage before coming out on top with a hard-fought 28-21 victory against rival Coatesville in the ultra-competitive District 1 6A bracket.
Check out some highlights from Downingtown West vs. Coatesville…

With two dandy contests under my belt already the previous two days I was looking forward to a potential thriller to end the week with Executive Education visiting Minersville. The last time I had attended a Minersville game I was treated to a 72-52 track meet when they dropped a regular season decision to 2A powerhouse Schuylkill Haven.
This District 11 2A #4 Minersville vs. #5 Executive Education tilt didn’t disappoint as the visiting Raptors (great name by the way!) blew into town and dominated on both sides of the ball in a convincing 26-6 result over the Battlin’ Miners (another great name!).
